Silver Black Brake Pads - Handbrake

Hi,

Changed the rear pads on my msc today. Took about hour and half in p****n rain! went ok, used special tool from ebay, reset brake light too. Now the handbrake seems to pull up a good bit more than before? is this normal? have i done something wrong? or do i just need to adjust the handbrake?

any advice welcome! the brakes seem to be working fine, pedal feels ok, little soft maybe?

thanks!

As a guide a handbrake should be fully on after 3 to 6 clicks. If it is outside this range
adjustment is simple and at the handbrake itself so you'll be dry inside the car .
In theory as the brakes wear there is a mechanism that takes up the wear so you
don't have to keep adjusting the handbrake. However it has finite graduations so
some adjustment after fitting new pads is normal. A big difference points to the
mechanism not working/seizing. It is the big spring at the calipers you should have
noticed when changing the pads.

Some people are like a Slinky ........ not really good for anything, but you still can't help
but smile when you shove them down the stairs

Please excuse me for not knowing how to spell simple words.

My handbrake didn't need any adjustment after changing front and rear pads, so I left it be.

The Bentley manual doesn't say anything about adjusting the handbrake in their section
on replacing rear brake pads.

There is a specific method of adjusting the handbrake when it needs to be adjusted which
does involve loosening the adjusting bolt until slack, taking the pads out, compressing the
caliper, reinstalling the pads, and adjusting the bolt near the handbrake, until the spring
at the rear caliper is in the right position, etc.

If worn pads are replaced with new pads, the rear pistons need to be pressed in.

To adjust the hand brake, pull the p-brake boot up and adjust via the nut. If the hand brake needs adjustment after a period of time, adjust via the nut; it is not necessary to press the pistons in again. A mid ground between brake drag and how far the p-brake is pulled up has to be found.
