Question Curious: Dunlop or Pirelli runflats, which are best?

I have 17" alloys with Dunlop SP Sport 9000 DSST, I have since had the two fronts replaced with the same tyre. My brother also has 17" wheels on his MINI and up until now has had the same tires.

His front two are (or were) illegal and today are being replaced. However this time the two fronts are going to be replaced with Pirelli Eufori@ tyres. This is on the recommendation by the tyre fitter that these are a better tyre, and combined with the fact that the Dunlops would have to be ordered in, and obviously with the tyres being illegal, he doesn't want to risk the 6 points two bald tyres would carry.

I'm just curious as to whether indeed the Pirelli is a better all round tyre?

Obviously I know in an ideal world the MINI wouldn't be running runflats at all, but at this stage he doesn't want to also replace the rears, which still have 5 or 6 mm tread.

Regards,

James.

Having used both, I preferred the Pirelli over the Dunlop. The dunlops are noisy and tramelling is horrendous.

Had both and much prefered the Dunlops, thought the Pirelli's were scary, bordering dangerous in the wet.

Odd, found it just the opposite.

Had Dunlops on my first MCS, then the second came with Pirelli's from the factory.

Changed them long before they were due cause i disliked them so much.

I was always slipping Dunlops in wet. Pirelli held much better but neither are really all that great.

Cheers for the replies, interesting to see two different opinions from people who have owned both.

I was under the impression the Dunlop was the better all rounder, and as far as I know it also carries a higher price tag (although I am aware that doesn't necessarily mean its any better!) When he gets it back later I'm sure he can make his own mind up.

It's turned out to be an expensive day for him because his brake pads were also found to be shot (54 plate car) and the alignment was out. The latter we knew about as it is what has caused the excessive wear of the tyres. BMW wanted £180 for a KDS, but the tyre outlet reckons they can do the same job for less.

All in I think its costing him £340 for tyres, pads and alignment. Is that fair?

James.

Wonder if these might be a cheaper better solution for you guys...

I started to buy these for my summers but Tire Rack was out so I went with the non-runflat equivalent. I haven't used them yet.

I have to agree with Windy... I found Dunlops to be far superior to the Pirellis... I've had problems with Pirellis in the wet... I found the Dunlop to be much safer. Also found that the Pirellis wear out a lot quicker too...

Once again, exact opposite for me. I wonder if a lot of this has to do with the grade of asphalt that we are driving on. Germany is very good at keeping their roads in mint condition.

Pirrellis for me

Hi guys,

My feelings are that I thought that my Pirrellis were dangerous, spent all summer driving a company cooper s with Dunlops on - the day i picked up my own cooper s I went round the a corner I did everyday at the same speed and nearly put the thing in a tree and that was in the dry.

Granted i was zipping along but the dunlops were/are loads better. I think the Pirrellis side wall is very different tothe dunlops. I'm no expert though

Andy

Thank you for the further input folks. Interesting reading.

Well the wheel alignment couldn't be done in the end as the track rod ends have seized and split. So its off down to Woodman's for it all to be sorted under warranty, they are doing the KDS too.

Feel a bit sorry for my bro as hes all ready had to have the steering column and suspension wishbones replaced. Luckily it was all under warranty mind.

James.

I've never driven on them, but I can compare Germany to USA. USA roads are rubbish as well.

That's the thing here... The tarmac used on most roads here is ok when dry... If it rains they become slippery and dangerous... If we have 1CM of snow the whole country grinds to a halt... nothing moves...

I've tried them both, and i agree with the others that the Dunlops were much better.

Dunlops - my car has always had them, but a friend's had Pirelli...

The SP01 runflats give a much better ride than the 9000 DSST btw

Ive gone from Dunlops to all 4 new Pirelli Eufori runflats. I can say without hesitation the Pirellis are much better than the Dunlops.

The Pirellis give a softer ride and I think are better in wet conditions. The Dunlops would lose grip very easily on a roundabout of you tried to have some fun.

I got mine done at kwik fit last week on a buy 3 get 4 tyres offer for £400 all in.

I tried getting non-runflats but all the garages I contacted would not do it.
