Back to front wheel swap

Hi, I want to swap my rear wheels to the front as they have been on there for 7 months and are getting worn down ( jcw 210 say no more!). So do I take them to a reputable garage and get them swapped round and do they need re-balancing?? They are 17" bullets with runflats. Any idea of what this would cost or is it a simple swap without any need for balancing??
Cheers

I've just swapped mine round in the past... Didn't have any probs at all... If they are Dunlops though, remember that they are rotational tyres...

Can you not just jack the car up your self and swap them back to front???

Although when you have to replace them by rotationg you will have to fork out for 4 tyres as all of them will be warn.

I leave mine til the fronts need replacing which i have just done, then the rear tyres go on the front and the new tyres on the back.

By rotational do you mean that they have to turn in the one direction and this would be marked on the tyres wouldn't it?? They are dunlops so I would have to obviously make sure they are going the right direction. So there is definitely no need for them to be re-balanced once swapped??

I see what you mean Scottyboy but just trying to make sure they all wear down evenly and if needs be in the future I will replace them all.

Yes, he means that they have to spin in a certain direction. It should be marked on the tire. If they are, you want to move left rear to left front, NOT left rear to right front (another way of rotating tires).

Nope, balancing is done when you put a tire on a rim. Moving the tires around will not change the balance of a tire unless you knock the weights off (not easy to do).

Hi,

It is safe to do this yourself.

Loosen the nuts before you jack the car up. Get the car on a flat piece of conrete / tarmac. Put the jack under the front jack point. Ideally put a chock / piece of wood / brick in front of the opposite front wheel, leave the car in gear with the handbrake on. Jack the car up until the front wheel gets of the ground. Then keep going with the jack and eventually the rear wheel will come of the ground as well. Take the wheels off, and swap front to rear. Then repeat for the opposite side. Remember to torque up all the bolts

Just remember, rotating tyres doesn't overall increase the life of a set of tyres. A tyre has a finite amount of tread to wear down, and on the mini that can be either worn down quickly on the front wheel or slowly on the rear wheel. Rotating can keep the wear amongst the 4 tyres even, so they need replacing at the same time.

Cheers

Robbo

I've never liked the whole idea of rotating as it's always safest to have the best treads on the rear so I replace the fronts - only - when I need to. And I'd rather buy tires two-at-a-time to spread the cost.
