Don't mix rf with regulars. Yes, with the MINI rims you can run regular tires. Although the shops are hard pressed to try and sell you those run flats. Even my local garage here tried to tell me today that I couldn't mount those regular tires on the run flat rims. I then explained to him that there was no difference in this rim and that I have run flat snows mounted on regular rims right now. Needless to say, I won the conversation and he successfully mounted the tires.

I needed to replace 2 tyres and had runflats at the time. I got quoted £290 for 2 Dunlop SP9000 runflats fitted.

I ended up paying £312 fitted for 4 Goodyear eagle F1 GSD3.

Yeah, you won't pay that much more for 4 regular tires over 2 run flats. That was the reason that I went that route.

If you want to stay with runflats, buy the Dunlop SP01.

Better ride and grip than the others, and appear to weigh a lot less than the Goodyears.

Don't get the Pirelli runflats. I've had three of them go flat on me. I had previously run a set of Dunlop runflats to the wear bars without any issues. I now have Kumho runflats on my street wheels.

The Pirelli runflats are crap.

What size tire did you get for that price?

I got 2 x 215/35/18's for £210. Everywere else was quoting close to £300 for the 2.

I just had them mounted and plan on putting them on my car this weekend. The Kumhos that I bought are also made in a run flat for about 50 USD more a piece. This is not a bad price for a run flat. I had originally ordered them but Tire Rack didn't have them in stock so I changed to the regular tires. I'll let you know what I think next week.

OK,I had some time this afternoon to mount the Kuhmos and took her for a spin. I'll give you my .02 worth on them.

What I have are the Kuhmo Ecsta SPT

Kumho Tire USA - Passenger - Ultra High Performance - KU31

These are NOT run flats but they do now make one in this style that is a bit more. Some of the things I was tired of with the run flats and handling are:
  • Noise! Run Flats are just really loud.
  • Trammeling (The car would easily catch the slightest imperfection in the road and try to change direction.

So, rather than mount run flats I thought that I would give regular tires a go. Here in Germany we have great road side assistance (ADAC) and I bought a puncture kit just in case.

So now for the first impressions... Squishy is a word I would use to describe it. The regular tires tend to give a bit more than the run flats so the initial impression was that it was a bit squishy. However, that faded when I noticed the road noise was almost down to nothing. I could talk to myself and hear myself at a regular level while at 100 kmh. Handling was very nice and these tires (didn't push them too much as they are new and need to wear in) are excellent in the corners. Lastly, there was little to no trammeling in the spots that I was used to having to grip the wheel tight. This might change a bit as they wear in and my poor snow tires are rather worn. I have these mount on my web spokes which is a pretty heavy rim (made by Ronal) but overall I am impressed with the feel and do recommend Kumho tires.

I'll post more on my thoughts as I drive on them a bit more but there you have it!
