I've just got a Clubman Cooper D which I'm really pleased and I'm planning to drive to the Alps for skiing. Its also my first experience of run flat tyres. I've got 16 inch alloys with Goodyear Excellence run flats. 195 55R 6
I was told I couldn't use snow chains on these wheels (not enough gap) so I got a set of steel 15inch with normal Michellin 175 65 R15 .I plan to put these on this weekend

I think these will take chains -any experience of chains on a mini?
I plan to put winter tyres on these wheels for next winter and save my run flats just for the UK.
Any recommendations on the winter tyres? Any experience of driving on motorways with them? Will they be worn out before I get to the mountains!

Also what do I do about a spare -is a mobility kit really going to be much use late at night on a dark snowy mountain road?
I have space in the boot for what looks like a bike wheel -can you get an emergency wheel instead of the goo or is it just an extra loading area?
I just don't have much confidence in the concept of run flats and tyre kits and need to make sure I can still move in snow!!
