Need pads and disks at 16k? (says dealer)

Hi all,
S has been at the dealers for a couple of days looking at a few issues the original supplying dealership couldn't resolve...........long story but let's just say I'm glad I got a 2nd opinion as I now have a new clutch and gearbox

Had first MOT 2 weeks ago and it flew through however was called today and advised I need pads and disks soon as they are down to 2-3mm (16k on the clock).

The disks are in good condition and look very clean, the brakes are very smooth and quiet and I don't do many miles (aprox 5k a year).

Are they trying to squeeze some extra cash out of me or do they really need changing at this point?

I'm very fastidious about car maintenance but also concerned about the environment so don't want to be replacing items until they have actually had their full use.

I'd also rather be spending the money on a GTT upper strut brace..

Thanks Geoff.

Were was it MOT'd? was it at the dealers who rang?

If it was, and the brakes were like this when you had the MOT then you should of been given a list with advisory changes that need to be done very soon.

If they did not say anything then, then i doubt that this is correct.

My brother "had" an Focus RS, he took it to the dealer at 22k for a service and they said that the brake discs and pads need changing ASAP. Beeing a knowledgable person he knew he could change them himself and said no to the £600 price tag.

The same discs and pads were on the car at the 33k service and then he formerly complained to the manager and got a stupid response.

My advice is to check them your self and see what thickness is on them.

Hi,
Was MOT'd at the original supplying dealer and nothing flagged up as needing attention.

Car has done maybe 100 miles since..

I'll have a look at them myself when I get the car back, seemed to me to be a bit odd and an additional 5k to me is a year's mileage.

What's the minimum thickness before replacement?

Cheers, Geoff.

Ohhhhh....

So the car got MOT'd 2 weeks ago and nothing came up and now they have the car back again? they have rang and said that the need changing?

I thought that it got done 2 weeks ago and then just rang you out of the blue with your car on the drive.

Even so, ill NEVER let a dealer change items such as that without first checking them myself.

Sorry, to make this clear..

MOT'd at original supplying dealer 2 weeks (100miles) ago - nothing flagged up as needing attention.

Car now at different dealer having some warranty work done as original dealer disputed "issues".

New dealership called to advise brake pads getting "low" and pads and disks should be replaced - did not protest or insist when I declined to have the work done.

Hope that makes the situation a little clearer.

Cheers, Geoff.

IMO from experience i would say that they do not need changing but i may be wrong as i have not seen any parts to say for sure.

But if that dealer says they are "low" after only 100 miles from the MOT then the original dealer should have given you an advisory sheet if they have done the MOT correctly.

They should defo last longer than that.

Mine have been changed twice over 49000 miles which to what im aware of is normal. They were very worn though.

I suppose it depends on how you brake etc but im sure you dont brake that hard to make your pads be that far down after 16000 miles.

Get it checkedout elsewhere as everyone else has said.

Update on this..

They are "advising" that the job will need to be done soon and apparently would not have considered the brakes to be an MOT failure.

Currenlty they are smooth and quiet, disks are very clean - I'll be taking the wheels off next week for a good clean and will do an inspection for pad thickness/disk wear then.

I can understand the dealership trying to keep the workshop busy but I'll not be replacing these until they really need to be done - just wasteful in my opinion not to make full use of wear/tear items such as these.

Thanks for the advice, Geoff.
