How much difference is it 205/45 vs 215/40?

Hi!
I want to know if someone use 205/45 R17 tire on a 17x7.5 inch wheel. Standard is to use this tire on a little narrower wheel such as 17x7. Will it be fine using 17x7.5 instead? Is it easy to damage the rims with this combination and other possible problems? I want to use 205/45 since the speedo will be the most accurate and it is used by MINI.

The Specs for most 205/45-17 tires on the TireRack show Rim Width Range as 6.5-7.5".

Thanks MINIAC

I think it will be just fine, I checked on tire rack. I hope that the combination of a correct speedo reading and lower weight (compared to 215 width) and even using less fuel/mile will be perfect for my needs.

I changed to 215/45-17

Its a slightly better fit and give a tad better ride quality and protection for the rims.

ok slim

...but I think your speedometer will be showing about 5% wrong speed (too low). Watch out for speed tickets . What was the main reason to change it?

215/45/17 is only 1.46% bigger in diameter compared to 205/45/17.
will read 71 mph when the smaller tire reads 70 mph.

Aren't the wheels you're considering ET40? If so you may encounter rubbing with 215/45-17 tires.

Yes that is true lol, this is hard indeed, I wish I had found some rims with higher ET. Thanks for your concearn MINIAC, I should probably use 205/45 but I am afraid it will be a harsh ride .
But I think it will look better with 205/45 since it will stick out less and like you said, risk for rubbing is reduced. I have ordered my wheels online so I have no chance to try before I buy, so I am trying my best to figure out what will work best. I will stick with my order and hope the ride is good although I am used to 175/65 R15 (my old setup) .

I changed to get rid of the runflat tyres, stuck Goodyear F1 GSD3s on it.

Its a great change, significantly better traction wet/dry ride quality much improved.

Only reason to change tyre size was that 205/45 was not available so i went for the 215 section.

The tyre fitters said they were a great fit on the wheels s-spokes

And the extra width/depth protects the wheels when the wife drives the car

I changed my order completely..

...today and will have 205/50 R16 on 7x16 rims. I decided I want some more comfort and the smaller rims/tires weigh less .
