Can tyres make the car faster?

Hi,

I have a R56 MCS still fitted with its original runflats. I've owned a MINI before and always replaced tyres with runflats as I have had two previous front tyre blow outs and have liked the safety factor.

But I don't know what to do this time. I want to get runflats - I don't mind stomaching the extra cost, and the ride comfort on the R56 is very good anyway. But I'm unsure about the grip.

As soon as I turn off the traction control, the front wheels instantly spin in 1st and 2nd gear under full throttle acceleration even in the dry and in a straight line. Therefore traction control must be fairly effective, but always cutting power.

If I got non-runflats that were very grippy, and switched traction control off, would the car be noticeably quicker in a straight line? Has anyone noticed this following a change?

My R53, as are many others, is night and day faster round bends and fast starts with non-runflats.

I would say yes.
For starters runflats are heavier tyres then normal ones, so the rotational mass would be reduced, therefore less energy needed to actually move the tyre leaving more energy to be transferred to the road. Also now that you'll have less undampened mass the suspension would work better so more chance of keeping the tyres efficiently on the tarmac will leads to better grip. Finally as the range of non-runflats is far greater then the runflats, you 'll be able to get more grippy rubber.
I'm sure there are many more reasons...

MINI, RX8 and MX5 - Done those............. It's now TTime

Very simple answer is Yes......

But then you still have to think on what non runflat you want fir example, Goodyear eagles are great in the dry and wet, Yokohama Parada spec 2's are better in the dry but not so good as the eagles in the dry.

runflats on my r53 S were shocking, in a straight line my mates N/A r53 was faster due to the fact that if i punch it all i got was wheel spin, i could spin the 1st/2nd/3rd and in fourth for a second they were that bad, they were also completly rubbish in water, i would aquaplane on water in a straight line doing 80km/h, i bought the eagle gsd3 f1's and my god did it make a HUGE difference. well worth the change
