The S-Spokes - Why so heavy

Well, as you might have seen I've been asking for people's opinions on which wheels I should get and in what sizes etc. I really do like the 17" OEM S-Spokes and would just prefer to have OEM wheels for dealer reasons. But the thing is...they're the heaviest damn wheels mini make! Why do they have to be so heavy (around 11.4 kilos or something ridiculous). My question is, will this new amount of weight (currently on 15" 8 Spokes (around 6 kilos) really dramatically and noticeably effect acceleration/braking and handling...not TOO fussed on ride comfort as the ride is currently quite bumpy due to stiffer suspension, but I like it.

Bigger wheels have more metal in them, and more metal equals more weight . The S spokes have alot more metal in them than any other MINI wheel. There probably the best looking wheel MINI make, but there just poorly designed.

Are the crown spokes an improvement over the S-Spokes and do they fit R50's?

Many people often wonder whether 5.4kg a corner will make much difference to handling/performance. After all thats just over 21kg total right!

Thing is this is on the WHEELS not IN the car.

Imagine the difference in running with a rucksack containing just 2kg in it against someone carrying the same 2kg but instead of on his back he's got 1kg tied around each ankle.

This gives you an idea of unsprung weight/alloys weight vs weight of the car.

Imagine how much difference some have changing from 15's to cheaper aftermarket 18's that can weigh around 25kg. My bro is one and notices a HUGE difference but is happy as it's the looks that does it for him

I personally would steer clear of S Spokes or anything anywhere near that heavy.

For weights of the OEM wheels look here
