Question Yet another confused girl with run flats

Hi,

I am really confused by the whole run flat thing.

I need new tyres soon ish, do I have to replace 4 run flats or can I have normal tyres put on - this would be prefered as they are so much cheeper.

I also have problems with the run flat indicator on the dash, it comes on now and again, but when I have the tyres checked they are fine, it has even been back to BMW and they couldnt find anything wrong with the tyres or the indicator.

I do have the mobility kit ( Slime and compressor thing) in the boot, so to avoid all this, could I not just have normal tyres put on????

Also would normal tyres make my mini a bit of a smoother ride, im currently preganant and at the moment it is so bumpy, and every slight nick in the road you feel, makes me unable to stand driving the thing????

Please advise

Thanks ever so much.

normal tyres will improve the ride, i had a service the other day and the technician said that i needed 1 new front tyre so i asked if i could just get a normal non-runflat and he said i could but it might interfere with the tyre pressure monitoring or something

Not recomended to mix/match non rf with rf

You coulfd get 4 non rf no problem, make sure you keep the tyre weld in the boot with you and compressor.
The low pressure tyre warning system works off the ABS, I had no probs with it when I changed mine to non rf on my previous Cooper S

As mention above. No problem using non RF tyres, but not advisable to mix and match. The runflat system doesn't monitor tyre pressure, it monitors wheel speed. If one tyre drops in pressure the wheel has a different rolling radius to the others. The ABS sensors spot that this wheel is rotating at a different speed and sets the system alarm off. So don't take any bull from tyre fitters that tell you that the light will come on / stay on with none RF tyres.

What ever you do, make sure you check with your insurance company first! If you were to have an accident, especially as the result of a blow-out they might use non runflat tyres as an out clause.

I totally agree with the others & going to change - i have just had a c**** experince with runflats & want to ditch as so as money permits. To cut the long story short i drove on my runflat flat & to cut the even longer story shorter!!! i need to replace that runflat & not sure that is hasn't contriputed to my suspension damge :-( not happy for a system that meant to mean you dont have these worries!!

I been to my local Elite & they think the same & aggree that i should change!! harrah a garge that understand the thousands on here!!

I wouldnt relie on the sytem as it hasn't helped me & go for just keep your runflats in case!! as back up

I only meet one person that went back

Go for if money persists & i wont be far behind when the money tree comes along

Good luck
