Couple of questions re Web Spoke alloys

Guys
Im looking at a set of 17 inch web spoke alloys, apparently they are genuine BMW fitted with brand new non run flat tyres. They came of a 57 plate MCS.

Will these fit an earlier R53 MCS ok, they are 7J with a 45 offset. Also, Im sure I heard the Mini rims should only use run flat tyres, is this true.

Here is a pick of one of the wheels, are the centres normally darker? The guy is fter £500 for the set

Cheers for any help!

Hummm, confusing. I have not seen genuine web spokes with an anthracite centre and I haven't seen aftermarket web spoke copies either so I have no idea if they are genuine . OEM web spokes have a 48mm offset so check with the seller about that. OEM alloys can be used with runflats or non-runflats.

Hi Steve

Thanks for your reply The seller assures me that they are genuine, they are on ebay if you fancy a look.

I had some webspokes on a MCS I owned back in 2005, they are lovely wheels (although I prefer the BBS split rims!) I have not see the anthracite finish either, would look great on my new BRG S (assuming the sale goes through!)

Is £500 with new tyres a good price? Apparently two have been refurbed, I wasnt aware you could refurb polished rims? Hopefully they have been done well! Also, if they have been refurbed now, does that mean they cant be done again?

Cheers matey

Tom

You can refurbish many times. There are 2 ways to refurbish R90's. You can split the alloy and do both parts separately. This is very very expensive. You can just have the polished section stripped and polished. Ask the seller which and was the polished section lacquered afterwords. Lacquered polished sections last longer and are easier to keep clean. However if lacquered it will need refurbishing again in the future.

Blimy, seems like a bit of a minefield!! So I want it laquered, however it will need a further refurb in the future??

They come with 205/40/17s fitted, will they look small in the arches with a smaller tyre?

Cheers fella

Yep polished rims are a pain, I'll never buy them again. I had identical problems with a set of crosspoke BMW rims. Using a gentle wheel cleaner like Meguiars helps. In the future I'll pay extra and get stainless steel rims. Personally I don't like the look of 205/40 tyres on a Mini. I have 215/40 on my R90 replicas and 215/45 on my original S-spokes. The 215/45 fill the arches better but you need 45-48 mm offset to prevent rubbing.

Corrosion On Web Spoke Alloys

Has anyone experienced corrosion issues with these wheels? Mine have started to corrode slightly where two metals are meeting together on the polished rim. Car is 2007. I have read somewhere - I think in Modern Mini - that this is a problem. When I mentioned it to dealer they said that because the wheel had been kerbed that it was not under warranty. There is no way that kerbing has caused it in my opinion, thats why I need to see if others are finding small amounts, only a few mm of corrosion on rims. The salesman when estimating a trade in on my car went staraight to the wheels looking for this problem - that tells you something.

Please have a loook on your cars and can you let me know. Wheels still look dead smart though.

Dave
