Run Flat tyre Indicator

How to i know that the run flat tyre indicator which warns you that a tyre has puncture is actually functional, i know theres a way to test if everything on the instrument clusters work, but how would i know that this light would activate when i get a puncture?

erm go down to a petrol station that has a working air compressor, with your engine running, let down one of your tyres via the valve and hey presto the light should come on!

NB: The warning light will stay on until you hit the reset button!

Er NO! Utter tosh. God this site has gone downhill, sad to see.

The MINI runflat system does not monitor tyre pressure in any way, shape or form. The system measures rotational speed of the wheels via the ABS sensors. The system monitors the rotatioanl speed of each wheel looking for changes. In the event of a puncture the diameter of the effected wheel changes, and therefore the rotational speed. When the rotational speed changes the car assumes that there is a puncture and lights up the warning light on the dash.

Because of this the light can come on if the pressure in one of the tyres is too high. this is common after a new tyre has been fitted as the fitters always over inflate the tyre and don't balance the pressures around the car. In my previous Coopers it's normally taken a drop/increase of about 3psi to light up the dash.

**Some MINIs in the USA are fitted with pressure monitoring systems on the valve stems**

Thank you for that Humph,

Answered my question. My light came on on the motorway today...stopped and checked all tyres...one was way more inflated than the rest (and they are new).... that has put my mined at rest....

Didn't work for me.. was driving thru Germany and got a flat tyre.

And now I can't find a tyre replacement as Dunlop no longer produces that particular model! Have to fork out 2 tyres now :-((
