Mine have gone the same with just the outer ring corroding, been quoted £50 a wheel at paint techniques in Nottinghamshire, they said he would have to split them to get to the back of ring, as this is where some of the corrosion starts and creeps round.
I think its pretty poor for wheels to corrode like this after 3 years and only 20k mls, (in my case).

Don't know if the sale of goods act would have clout against BMW, worth a try I suppose.

Have you got any kerbing on the wheels?

If the car is still under manufacturer warranty try claiming under that I know a lot of people who've had replacements under warranty

There maybe some minor kerbing on the nearside wheel but the other three don't have any kerbing, but they are all corroding the same, as for the warranty its out of the three year one, so can't see BMW offering to do anything.

The guy's at paint techniques said it's common on other BMW models with split rim wheels, and said I would be lucky if I got any joy with BMW.

If it is cracking on the other rims, I would say that it was because of the way the tires were installed. I had no issues (have fitted a few tires on those wheels) until recently when the fitter used a metal duckhead to remove the tire. This is the piece that rotates around the wheel to remove the tire. If they use a metal one, it will destroy the plastic. That is what happened to mine and the reason that I complained. Of course, kerbing will also do it.

One of the MINI parts people that I spoke with here said that it was common that they crack. I told her that mine were fine until they were improperly handled and that this is not common (my car is going on five years now). Bottom line is that I think that the fitters are the ones that destroy them and let them roll out like that.

Hmmm, you've made me think nadia! My laquer was bubbling and I was chuffed that my miner dealership 'replaced' my alloys, (I was shocked that they did this in a day as I thought they would need to order the wheels in). I am such a paranoid person I was hoping that they hadn't just refurbed my own wheels rather than give me a brand new set. What's weird though is that the outer rim doesn't have the 'liney' finish that my originals did on the outher rim where I had lines that circulated around the rim. I am now wondering if new wheels don't have this feature or if they've just refurbed my wheels thus removing the liney finish just like yours did when it was refurbed...if this is the case I'm mad as surely refurbihsed wheels can deteriorate quicker than a brand new set?

Just been looking through threads and the pics in the op look exactly like mine, knackered, mine have maybe a bit more curbing. The wife drives it.

It does seem that most damage is caused by tyre fitters, other than bmwmini, when they pop the tyres when replacing.

Was thinking of having mine refurbished but if they are going to get damaged by the local garage when changing them might not be worth it.

The price I can get new runflats at my local far outweighs the cost of going to a dealer. .

Question

Have we established if they can be refurbished anywhere in the UK?

Ebay auction 360424696609 (sorry, can't post any links yet) suggests that they can be refurbished, maintaining the original look rather than being sprayed all over. They look great refurbished.

Mine aren't corroded as badly but there is definitely some black stuff going on in the seem between the two parts.

I like the looks but would love to get them mint again, particularly because the front left wheel took some abuse by the previous owner.

I have been looking to get my R98s refurbished and have found a few places in Sheffield that are willing to do it. Only trouble is the cash - at least £300 for the set! I'm not disputing the work involved, but I'm seriously thinking about doing them myself.

Found a video of someone doing their Z4 wheels, but wondered whether anyone has any advice on the specific mini wheels? Are they difficult to split and put back together again? Are there any specific things I need to look out for? Does anyone know the torque settings to tighten the bolts back up to? If anyone has done this before, I'd be really grateful for some pointers. All help would be appreciated!
