Tyre wear on run flats

I've just noticed that both my front tyres (Dunlop 16")are going to have to be replaced v.shortly. I've only done 7000 miles! Anyone else got poor mileage out of their tyres. I don't fancy replacing them every 7000 miles or so.
The rears are fine and hardly wornand its not as if I've been ragging it everywhere. Could my tracking be out? Another point I suppose is how much are replacement run flats?

Any help or opinions will be much appreciated.

Brad.

Sorry I can't comment on the wear issues, but 195/55-16 Dunlop DSSTs are available from the Tire Rack for $136 - $168 depending upon which model (3000A or 5000A) and speed rating you need.

R50 investigated the prices for these tires here .

I will soon do the same in this area. I am looking for 17" run flats, but will ask about the 16" ones as well and post the results here.

Does your car have/had the "pull to left " syndrome?

If so, that will explain for the early wear... and your dealer should do something about it...

Question

Where is the wear located? Evenly across the tire? Mostly in the middle? Mostly on both edges? Mostly on either the inside or outside edges? Same on both tires? You have the performance summer tires which don't last that long but 7000 miles still sounds like fast wear; how much tread is left?

My Goodyear Eagle performance summers are also quite worn after 9500km (6000 miles) before I put my winters on recently. My fronts have 3/16ths (5mm) of tread left but the rears have 5/16ths (8mm) left. I drove quite hard on them though, many chirping starts and lots of hard cornering so I'm not really surprised to see where the fronts are. Looks like I'll get at least one more summer out of the front set and two out of the rears for 4 total summers or about 24000 miles out of them assuming they continue to wear at the same rate. I'll be putting what were the rears on the front in the spring.

Hopefully owners of Cooper S's with all-season Dunlops can chime in and let us know how they are wearing.

Further to HarryIndyBlue's comments, have your front wheel alignment checked and tires rotated.

It should help you get more mileage out of the present set.

On a re-think, I suspect that 4 seasons out of my Goodyears will not be possible. The fronts lost 5mm this season, the rears lost 2mm. That means when swapped the fronts and rears should both be down to 3mm after next spring & summer, assuming I drive as hard as I did this year. That will *hopefully* give me a third season on them, perhaps assuming that I rotate the rears to the front partway through. So it looks like I'll probably get a total of 18000 miles or 29000km out of them.

If your 280 rated Dunlops are bald on the front at 7000 miles then I'd wonder about underinflation, especially if it is worse at both edges.

Thanks for all the replys people.

The wear seems to be fairly even over both the fronts, The tread is down to about 2mm.

The car is due for its first service soon so I'll get the dealer to check the tracking and alignment etc as I'm not too pleased about the wear.

To be be fair this is the only complaint I can level at the car in a year of ownership, but I'm still a bit miffed.
