Brake pad wear and tear!

Hi all, can anyone tell me the usual amount of time that brake pads should last? I have a 09 mini FIRST with almost 30000km on it. I had it serviced just at the start of the year at a proper mini garage as part of my TLC package. They never told me that the cars brake pads were that badly worn. The car is now telling me that it needs new pads and brake fluid. Is this not the sort of stuff they should be checking in a service??

Brake pad wear is very much dependent upon the driver and driving conditions, and yes, this is the sort of thing that should be checked at any service, regardless of the service being performed. I always check my customers brake pads at oil changes and advise them accordingly. As a car owner, don't be afraid to ask the mechanic to look at specific (or general) items when you have it at their shop. The distance remaining for items like oil and brakes are only a guideline and change as the vehicle is driven, this is why they call it "condition based" service.

I don't know about 2nd Gen, but any type of 1st Gen Service was supposed to include a brake pad inspection.

Have you changed the wear-indicator? (Left front)

If you did, you need to get it to either a dealer or someone who can reset the error-codes. If you did not: do it, check if the light turns of and. If it does not, take it to a dealer or someone who can reset the error-codes
