wheel size help

i got my wheels refurbed and didn't keep the runcraps that were on them - as a matter of fact, i threw them away.

So then it comes to pick some new rubber, and I'm wondering what size will fit my wheels, I am convinced they're 17s.

I ask my friend what size are the tyres on his gf's mini, as they're the same...

he says 195 60 16....16s???

I'm confused, so I measure my wheel with tape...sure enough 17.5 inches diameter across, but I do notice the number 6 x 16 on the wheel, so i'm confused as hell.

THen I measure my friend's mini....same, 17.5 inch across the face of each wheel.

Why am I being so thick?? are these wheels 16s but actually 17.5 across (i.e .75 inch wider than the lip?) or what?

....jeez, what a noobelicious first post, I can only hope it gets better...

Yes, that's right. The wheel diameter is measured where the tyre sits - between the green arrows. If you're measuring a little under 17.5" at the rim - between the red arrows - then you've got 16" wheels.
