Steel rims -- Different wheel bolt?

Hi,

When changing to steel rims on a mini, do I need shorter wheel bolts than for alu rims?

I will soon change to winter tires on my wifes mini convertible, model year 2005. The summer tires sits on 16" alu rims (chili package) and the winter tires on mini original steel rims. First time I do this on this car.

On our other car (Merc), changing from an Alu rim to a steel rim its very important that you use shorter wheel bolts. The steel rim is "thinner", so if the bolts for an alu rim is used, the bolt will go further into the wheel hub and damage some vital things. Not sure what, but I think on the rear, the handbreak stuff will be damaged.

I called the local mini workshop, and they didn't know. Not giving much confidence given that I live in Sweden and you have to use winter tires in the winter by law and many use steel rims for these tires.

Appreciate any help.

Cheers, Johan

I don't know for sure, but RealOEM lists exactly the same M14x1,25* wheel bolt with part number 36136781151 for the steel wheels on a Mini One as for alloys on other Minis, so I think the answer is the same bolt is used.

*M14x1,25 is thread diameter x thread pitch, so that doesn't say how long the bolt is.

Thanks for the info and the very useful site reference.

I found the exact wheels on the site, both 16" alu and steel rims for a mini cooper 2005 convertible. As you wrote both wheels use the same part number bolt. Has to be identical then.

Cheers.
