Say I wanted to go to a tire with a smaller diameter. Can the computer be adjusted for that? I know that sometimes there isnt adjustment in the "input diameter" sense but sometimes you're allowed to tweak the voltage to a sensor to get what you want (over a limited span). I'm hoping Senor Andy and is infinite mini computer wisdom knows the answer.
I know that in the VW/Audi world, the instrument cluster can be recoded with one of a few discrete distance multipliers. BUT, the MINI is wacky. Did you notice that the speedometer read zero on the dyno while the front wheels were spinning 100+ MPH? I'll try to find out what's up with that. For at least a few thousand miles, I'll be running tires that are 4.1% smaller than stock.
I noticed that when i had my car on the dyno earlier this year. Yeah thats funky but in reality you really are going 0 mph, right? I just figured the speedo signal comes from the rear wheels. Is it electronic or is there a cable?
Re: Can the computer be recoded to a shorter tire?
Actually, the computer does not have to be 're-coded' for the different wheels. The way it functions is it detects a 'difference' in the rotational speed of the wheels. If it senses one, two or three wheels rotating faster than any of the others, useing the standard ABS wheel speed sensors, it lights the light in the display. If, by chance, you were to have all four tires go 'flat' at once, it would not detect it.
The concept is simple. A tire with less, or no, air pressure will be slightly smalled in diameter and therefore rotate faster. In the case where all four tires go flat at the same time it detects no 'difference' in rotational speed so no warning.

Correct, to get 'true' speed some sort of software correction would have to be made for different size wheel/tire combos.
My guess would be something from the factory. Good luck trying to have it done.
