Tyre Pressure Monitor - is it present, how to tell?

Hi all,

I am new here, not a Mini owner as yet, but I have viewed a potential Mini Cooper S, it's a 2011 model - looks great.

It has the Chili Pack and 17" wheels. The tyres are NOT run flats. In the boot there is a 'inflation kit' or whatever Mini calls it. It was ordered/specified without run flats, just normal tyres.

I wonder if someone with knowledge of this generation of Cooper S can help - if a new Mini Cooper S was ordered WITHOUT run flats, on 17" wheels, does this still mean all the tech. (pressure sensor etc.) is still in place should I want to put run flats on at a later stage.

How do you tell - is there dash board test?

Please don't tell me never to do so - I know all about the ride, handling issues (coming from a 1 series owner with lots of experience knowledge of them!)... but I'd like to know that should the technology improve (and I think it will) this Cooper S has the potential to have them fitted without any extra costs or hassle.

With many thanks - A 'hopefully' soon to be Cooper S owner!

When you start the car up you get the 2 tyre pressure indicators come on in the rev counter display for about 10 secs as the car does a system check, if the system has flat tyre detection.
They arent pressure sensors on the UK version, it works off I think the abs system and detects wheel revolutions, so as a tyre deflates it goes round quicker so picks up its going down.

Remember you only get a flat tyre at the bottom

Yes, all 2011 Minis have tyre deflation sensing - in Europe it is worked indirectly from the ABS sensors whatever tyre type was originally fitted, though in the USA the wheels have actual pressure sensors fitted to meet US law.

And my understanding is that all 17" Mini wheels will be runflat-suitable by having the extra humps on the wheel rim that hold the (deflated) runflats on.
