broken locking wheel nut (mcgard)

hi guys,

i am changing my wheels at the moment so i had to get the mcgard locking nuts out. 3 out of 4 came off fine, but the 4th one on the drivers side front wheel wouldn't come off. it ended up breaking the key. i ordered a new key from germany which only took 2 days to come and tried again... same thing happened. it's buckled both keys. i tried to hammer it on - not the best idea i realise and now the wheel nut look reaaaallly bad. instead of ordering yet another key that 99% wont work... does anyone know how i can get this thing off. the alloy is ruined anyway so i don't care about damaging that more, i just need the wheel off.

thanks

j

Take it to a machine shop & have them braze a real lugnut to the end of the lock. Then you'll likely be able to turn it out.
Best of luck! Bodinski

Ok, I'll be the one to ask.
Who torqued that lock down?

If you don't care about the alloy just drill out the bolt. It's a 12.5mm thread so a 12mm cut it out fine.
Just make sure you dont hit the rotor but from the sound of things that might no be doing so well either.

i spent 2.5 hours drilling my wheel locking nut off cos the same thing happened to me , lucky enough the first 3 came off ok but the last one ripped the key insert to bits ,

this is the second time ive had to drill off aftermarket wheel locking nuts ,

The first set of McGard i got , the key only fitted 2 of the wheel locking nuts and would no were near fit on the other 2 ........ great

people call the OEM locking nuts but at least i can get them off without the key breaking

Anyone know of any other wheel locking nuts which have 2 keys with them or any others better than Mcgard ones

Your best bet is to use copper grease on your bolts before torquing them down.
I would not trust any wheel lock that is not supplied by an OEM.

Is there a brand name for this ? or do I just go into the store and ask for copper grease ?

I think halfords do small tubes, don't think there's any differences between makes.
If you ask for copper grease they'll point you in the right direction
Just done mine this aft, a thin smear around the seat and a small amount on the threads

any quality wheel lock would be suffice i'd say. i have some volk racing lugs and they are great. no power tools on those though, might strip the lock.

btw. the cheap one's are the one's you'd watch for the most. some of those can be taken of by just a socket.
