Spacesaver spare ok for a MC with 16" wheels?

I'm thinking of specifying a Cooper with the spacesaver spare but also 16" wheels & runflats.

Will this work? Or as the spacesaver is only a 15" wheel would the car become unstable if I had to use it?

I like the 16" wheels because they look better, but would probably replace the runflats with normals once they'd worn out. Thus the need for some sort of spare.

Thanks for any info.

I don't think you can specify the spacesaver with anything other than 15".

Thanks Monkeyhanger.

So its a trade off between aesthetics & praticality then.

Theoretically though, can you use the spacesaver on a car with 16" wheels? Or is the diameter of the 15" spacesaver and its tyre so different to the 16" combo as to make this unsafe?

United-Kingdom spacesavers on my old Punto

Yeah Ok so I admit it - I used to own a Punto ....

and it had spacesaver spare. On the 1 occasion that I had to use it ( on the front axle ) there was a definite noise from the gearbox as the differential was ' wound up ' by the difference in size between the spacesaver & the standard road wheel.

Probably since the difference is even greater for MINI with 16" rims this is even more of a problem and could cause gerabox damage ?

The outside diameter of every tire available on a MINI is almost exactly the same, there's just less sidewall on the 16's then 15" and even less on the 17" (or 18" for that matter). Its what's reffered to as 'plus 1", plus 2" sizing' going from 15" to 16", or 16" to 17"

So you can use the spacesaver spare with any tires you happen to have, and it will work similarly.

Not all cars work like that, but MINIs do.

Magic 8-ball was correct. All be in awe of Magic 8 ball.

Thanks guys.

Stryder, for your ever capacious knowledge.

Trucker, yeah well someone has to buy all those Puntos that get churned out. I actually think Fiat designs are quite good (well apart from the Multipla ) but the cars themselves are made and feel 'cheap'.

I didn't think that you could specify a space saver wheel unless you had 15" wheels but when i ordered my ONE which i picked up two weeks ago i specced it and 17" s spokes. There apparently was no problem.Admittedly i dropped the s spokes off the order later and bought some delivery only s spokes off MINI2.com but there was np problems with speccing it.The www.mini.co.uk site allowed me to spec it.
