my front toyo's are obviously wearing alot quicker , is it worth swapping them round to get a bit more mileage out of the set or will it cause problems ?

There have been many posts about this. Try doing a search.

In a nutshell all you're going to do is have to replace 4 tyres at once by doing this. There are also potential handling problems with running a set of front worn tyres on the back and the backs on the front.

The search should tell you more

It was acceptable in the 80's

If you wait until there is uneven wear, you probably shouldn't rotate the wheels. Ideally, you should rotate the wheels every 5000 miles (maybe less) so that you get even wear. At least, that is what I do and it seems to be working.

i agree with these two guys, however i changed mine when the fronts were only 1mm legal. ive had no problems, if anything the car has become even more fun as on damp roads you can get the back out really easily. woohoo! had the worn tyres on the back for 4months done about 5000 miles of hard driving and they havnt changed, still 1mm legal.
