Press Release - 04/16/2003

Woodcliff Lake, NJ, April 16, 2003.... The Big Apple witnesses the debut of an exciting enhancement to the MINI Cooper S for the U.S. market - the John Cooper Works package. Produced by the legendary aftermarket company, John Cooper Works, this exciting 200 hp package comes just 12 months on from MINI's U.S. launch at the 2002 New York International Auto Show. Now, the John Cooper Works package offers customers yet another way to individualize their MINI - this time with real performance in mind.

Developed by the legendary John Cooper Works Company for a global market, the unique package will be sold exclusively through MINI dealers and will be covered under MINI's comprehensive new car warranty. The package includes a reconfigured cylinder head, uprated supercharger along with special engine electronics and a performance exhaust. This enhancement takes the regular 163hp MINI Cooper S to over 200 hp.
Importantly for existing MINI owners, the package can be retrofitted to their current MINI Cooper S. The complete package comes with an MSRP of $4,500 plus dealer installation.

Performance is at the heart of the MINI Cooper S and the John Cooper Works Package takes this philosophy one step further. The cornerstone of the package is an enhanced Eaton supercharger with specially coated vanes that generate increased flow pressure. The unit comes with a new pulley design that allows the unit to spin at a higher RPM, generating an increase in power.

A high performance head is also a key ingredient. The modified head has improved port flow and, crucially has been especially designed for the increased compression and heat produced by the supercharger.

The package also includes a reprogrammed Electronic Control Unit (ECU), which manages all engine control functions including airflow, combustion, fueling and spark advance. The enhanced ECU has been recalibrated to optimize power output and drivability, resulting in a lively throttle response and increased acceleration in the mid-range torque band.

Also included in the package is a stainless steel sport exhaust system. The system is a parallel-flow, low backpressure system with superb interior and exterior noise quality. The system adds a throatier, more powerful exhaust note has distinctive looking twin chrome exhaust tips.

The John Cooper Works Cooper S package promises enhanced performance and it delivers. With the package, power is increased to an impressive 200 bhp at 6950 rpm from the same 1.6 liters of displacement. In comparison, the already impressive MINI Cooper S produces 163 bhp at 6000 rpm in unmodified form. Torque is also up, rating at 177 foot-pounds at 4,000 rpm for the equipped car versus 155 foot-pounds at 4,000 rpm for the unequipped car.
The John Cooper Works equipped MINI Cooper S sprints from 0-60 in an improved 6.5 seconds with a top speed increased to 140 mph. This compares to a 0-60 time for the unequipped MINI Cooper S of 6.9 seconds and a top speed of 135 mph. The performance upgrade with the John Cooper Works package is very noticeable in all driving conditions and is an ideal compliment to the superb handling and chassis dynamics of the MINI Cooper S.

Visual cues are understated and will appeal to the MINI enthusiast. A unique chrome John Cooper Works badge adorns the rear deck lid and, when raised, the bonnet reveals a visually appealing silver intercooler surround with John Cooper Works logo. An individually numbered valve cover plaque tops it off and commemorates the exclusivity of this special package.

John Cooper Works has engineered this kit so that it can be offered in all markets where the MINI is sold around the world. Therefore, a MINI Cooper S equipped with the John Cooper Works Package must be able to withstand extreme temperatures and variations in fuel quality, but still offer enhanced power in an extremely reliable package.

The John Cooper Works package is sold and professionally installed through all MINI dealers in the U.S. A MINI Cooper S equipped with the dealer-installed package is fully backed by MINI's 4 year 50,000 thousand-mile new car warranty. And the John Cooper Works package is not just limited to new cars. Owners of an existing MINI Cooper S may also visit their local MINI dealer and have the kit installed at any time. The balance of the factory warranty will still remain in effect.

John Cooper Works is no ordinary aftermarket company. Since the 1940s, the company has produced celebrated racing cars, notably the front-engine Cooper Bristol driven by Fangio and rear engine Coopers for Formula 1, driven by Jack
Brabham, Bruce McLaren and Stirling Moss. Under John Cooper's direction, the Cooper Car Company won consecutive Formula 1 Constructors' World Championships in 1959 and 1960.

The Cooper name is forever entwined with MINI, originating with the 1961 MINI Cooper, which was developed by John Cooper. John recognized MINI's inherent motorsport potential and his team produced cars that took numerous race titles, and the MINI Cooper S became the stuff of legend with 3 Monte Carlo Rally wins between 1964 and 1967, driven by greats such as Paddy Hopkirk and Rauno Aaltonen. The Cooper company continues to produce aftermarket parts for the classic MINI and played an active part in the development of the new generation MINI Cooper. John Cooper passed away just as the new car came to market and the company is now run by his son, Michael.

Jack Pitney, general manager of MINI USA said: "We are thrilled to be bringing this exciting package to the U.S. MINI's regular specification cars are exhilarating to drive in themselves, but the addition of this unique package takes the MINI experience to a whole new level."

Note: The Cooper version of the John Cooper package will not be offered for sale in the U.S. market.

Press Release - 02/04/2004

Chicago, Illinois - February 4th, 2004 ... MINI USA announces the debut of the MINI Cooper S MC40. This limited-production commemorative edition celebrates the 40th anniversary of MINI's win of the famed Monte Carlo Rally in 1964 - a victory that forever changed the reputation of MINI to that of a true motorsport legend.

The MINI Cooper S MC40 possesses all the distinctive visual characteristics that connects this limited production model to that of its historic predecessor. With only 1,000 units planned, the limited production MC40 comes with a set list of standard equipment and special features and will appear only in Chili Red with a white roof - the signature colors of the winning car. Customers are able to order the MINI Cooper S MC40 at dealers with expected delivery by April, 2004. MSRP will be about $27,000 including $550 for destination.

MINI and the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally - The Making of a Legend
What makes this limited edition so special is the historic event the MINI Cooper S MC40 commemorates. The 1964 Monte Carlo victory heralded the car as a worthy motorsport competitor and set the Mini on a course to become a motoring icon lasting 40 years to this very day.

The date was January 17th, 1964 and the Monte Carlo Rally was becoming more challenging than ever with the entry of well-organized factory teams. Competition for the Mini was stiff with bigger, more powerful cars from Ford, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo to Citroen, Saab and other pedigree challengers.

Piloted by fearless rally driver Paddy Hopkirk and his skilled navigator, Henry Liddon, the pint-sized Mini overcame great odds in all sorts of challenging conditions. Ice, twisty mountain passes, darkness and above all, formidable challengers, made for an exciting, flat-out drive for the team. On snowy sections of the route, the Mini's nimble handling and front-wheel-drive proved advantageous over the more powerful, albeit heavier, larger rear-wheel-drive competition. In the final moments of the rally on the Grand Prix circuit, Paddy and the pint-sized Mini were tenacious, pulling a victory over the second place contender by little more than 30 points.

It certainly was the sensation in the rally season that year: A small red David with a white roof proudly showed its tailpipe to all those ultra-powerful Goliaths, clinching overall victory in the Monte Carlo Rally. And in this "big bang", the tiny little car immediately became a legend.

Originally conceived as an inexpensive and economical means of transportation, the Mini had been transformed into the hot-blooded Mini Cooper and Mini Cooper S thanks to the legendary John Cooper of Formula 1 fame. John recognized the Mini's excellent attributes as a quick and nimble performer with great potential on the motorsport circuits. The Mini Cooper and Mini Cooper S clearly stood out as the "every man's sports car".

Wherever the Mini - either in standard trim or in highly modified form - appeared at the start of a race, it was always good for a genuine surprise. Indeed, the Mini wrote many a headline in the world of rally racing, just like it made things more than difficult for the usual "tough guys" on race circuits the world over. There was truly no other car in the market able to offer the same kind of sporting performance for so little money and providing outstanding driving pleasure within such compact dimensions.

Forty years on nothing has changed: The features which once took the classic Mini to victory in that historic race to Monaco remain the basic ingredients of the MINI today. With its compact exterior dimensions, the new MINI simply whisks around corners, resting solidly on its wide track and long wheelbase. In particular, however, every driver given the opportunity to take the wheel of a MINI will feel immediately why entering the Monte Carlo Rally would indeed be a wonderful experience. Both generations of MINI clearly stand out from all other cars in precisely the same way. They are extremely agile and posses go-kart-like reflexes.

The MINI Cooper S MC40 - A Salute to History
Competitors could not miss the distinctive red and white colors and tidy dimensions of the Mini that wrote history in 1964. Taking cues from the winning car, the same colors adorn the MINI Cooper S MC40. Special commemorative markings on the car include the famous "33-EJB" on the bonnet and a special 40th anniversary rally graphic on both the bonnet and rear quarters. The car proudly wears special magnetic door plaques with the unmistakable white and black "number 37". The plaques stay securely in place at speed, but can be easily removed if needed.

The MINI Cooper S MC40 comes with a set of distinctive 17-inch, multi-spoke alloy wheels. The two-piece wheels are finished in anthracite gray and feature a polished aluminum lip. Other special equipment includes rally-style driving lights with chrome bezels, a chrome grille, mirror caps and rear boot handle. A tasteful 'GB' insignia adorns the rear boot lid, paying tribute to the car's place-of-origin in Oxford, England.

The standard equipment list also includes a sport package with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), front and rear fog lights, on-board computer and Xenon headlamps with power wash - features a rally driver could have only dreamed of in 1964.

In the cabin, the dash panel is clad in genuine, lightweight carbon fiber and the seats wear striking red and black leather upholstery unique to this model. A special gauge package is mounted in the center console and indicates voltage and oil temperature. The shift knob features a 40th Anniversary Monte Carlo insignia and has a satin aluminum finish. The interior also features a thick leather wrapped, three-spoke sport wheel and all-weather rubber floor mats to protect the carpets from would-be rally drivers' shoes.

To round out the unique features included in the MINI Cooper S MC40, there is a special numbered commemorative plate in the center console indicating the exclusivity of each car.

"We have created this car to mark a great event in MINI's history", stated Jack Pitney, Vice President, MINI USA. "The 1964 Monte Carlo victory was the event that put MINI on the map to become a lasting motoring icon and the MINI Cooper S MC40 pays a fitting tribute to our rich heritage."

With the MINI Convertible's standard 50/50 split fold-down rear seats, this clever design allows customers to fit larger items through the boot lid opening into the back.

The top also comes with a heated rear glass window and is available in three distinct colors - black, blue and green. On the subject of colors and customer choice, the MINI Convertibles are available in 12 colors with Hot Orange and Cool Blue exclusive to the convertible models.

A high level of standard safety is built into the MINI Convertibles. In addition the front impact airbags the MINI Convertibles offer side impact airbags that protect the thorax and head of both front passengers in the event of a side impact. Thanks to MINI's design, conceived from the start with both a hardtop and a convertible in mind, the MINI Convertibles are rigid with added structural enhancements to the A-pillars, side door sills and a high-strength, light weight aluminum roll-over bar contoured and integrated with the rear headrests.

A lot of value is standard in the MINI Convertibles at an attractive MSRP. However, the MINI Convertibles also offer a whole host of optional features and equipment to give customers the opportunity to build their own unique MINI Convertible.

In addition to the plethora of stand-alone options available for MINI customers to choose from, popular options are available in reasonably priced and easy to order packages. Both the Premium and Sport packages are available for the MSRP of $1,350 and the Cold Weather package is available for $300.

There is a variety of new interior trim options such as chrome instrument bezels, or body-color dash panels and a chrono gauge cluster. Other options such as navigation system, Harman Kardon sound system and a variety of wheel and upholstery combinations provide customers with a wide range of options to personalize their MINI Convertible.

Press Release - 10/27/2004

Woodcliff Lake, NJ October 27, 2004.... MINI USA announces the availability of its new higher-output John Cooper Works kit for 2005. Produced by the legendary aftermarket company John Cooper Works, the new kit for the MINI Cooper S offers increased horsepower and torque over that of the previous generation. Horsepower is now increased to 207 hp at 6,950 rpm from 200 hp at the same rpm. Torque is also boosted, now registering 180 pounds-feet at 4,500 rpm, up from 177 pounds-feet at 4,000 rpm.

The unique John Cooper Works Company kit is sold exclusively through MINI dealers and is covered under MINI's comprehensive new car warranty. Key enhancements for the new 2005 John Cooper Works kit include a redesigned air box with an electronically-controlled air induction system, a set of higher flow fuel injectors and a reprogrammed electronic control unit.

The new air box features an electronically controlled valve that opens an additional air duct at higher engine speeds, This allows more fresh air to enter though a special low restriction filter element. In addition to dramatically increasing the airflow, the new air box creates a more powerful induction sound that compliments the impressive growl from the performance exhaust, also part of the kit.

Of course, the cornerstone of the package remains the enhanced Eaton supercharger with specially-coated vanes that generate increased flow pressure. The unit comes with a pulley design that allows the unit to spin at a higher RPM. This, along with the increased flow pressure, generates an increase in power over the stock unit.

A high performance cylinder head also remains a key ingredient. The modified head has improved port flow and has been specifically designed for the increased compression and heat produced by the supercharger. For 2005, new injectors with a higher fuel flow and a set of performance spark plugs with a colder heat rating, also help to increase the power output.

With its new upgrades for 2005, the enhanced Electronic Control Unit (ECU) has been recalibrated to optimize power output and drivability, resulting in lively throttle response and increased acceleration in the mid-range torque band. The reprogrammed ECU optimizes the power output by managing all engine control functions including airflow, combustion, fuel delivery and spark advance.

Also included in the package is a stainless steel Sport Exhaust System. The system is a parallel-flow, low backpressure system with superb interior and exterior noise quality. The system adds a throatier, more powerful exhaust note, and has distinctive-looking twin chrome exhaust tips.

Visual cues for the kit are understated and will appeal to the MINI enthusiast. A unique chrome John Cooper Works badge adorns the rear deck lid and when raised, the bonnet reveals a visually appealing silver intercooler surround with a John Cooper Works logo.

The John Cooper Works kit is sold and professionally installed through all MINI dealers in the U.S. A MINI Cooper S equipped with the dealer-installed package is fully backed by MINI's 4 year, 50,000-mile new car warranty. And the John Cooper Works package is not just limited to new cars. For those customers who already have the previous-generation John Cooper Works kit installed on their MINI Cooper S, a special upgrade kit includes the new air box, injectors and a reprogramming of the ECU for $525.00 plus 1.5 hours of labor for installation. Also, owners of an existing MINI Cooper S may visit their local MINI dealer and have the kit installed at any time. The balance of the factory warranty will still remain in effect. The full 2005 John Cooper Works kit retails for $4,650.00 plus an estimated 10 hours of labor for installation.

John Cooper Works is no ordinary aftermarket company. Since the 1940s, it has produced celebrated racing cars, notably the front-engine Cooper Bristol driven by Juan Fangio and rear engine Coopers for Formula 1, driven by Jack Brabham, Bruce McLaren and Stirling Moss. Under John Cooper's direction, the Cooper Car Company won consecutive Formula 1 Constructors' World Championships in 1959 and 1960.

The Cooper name is forever entwined with MINI, originating with the 1961 MINI Cooper, which was developed by John Cooper. Recognizing MINI's inherent motorsport potential, Mr. Cooper's team produced cars that took numerous race titles, and the MINI Cooper S became the stuff of legends with three Monte Carlo Rally wins between 1964 and 1967, driven by greats such as Paddy Hopkirk and Rauno Aaltonen. The Cooper company continues to produce aftermarket parts for the classic MINI and played an active part in the development of the new generation MINI Cooper. John Cooper passed away just as the new car came to market and the company is now run by his son Michael.

Press Release - 12/30/2004

Woodcliff Lake, NJ - December 30, 2004... MINI's fun and spirited brand personality is highlighted yet again - now with the addition of new optional features and a performance package. The MINI Cooper S with automatic transmission will make its world debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month. A limited slip differential for the MINI Cooper S equipped with a manual transmission will also be presented along with the new 2005 John Cooper Works tuning kit.

World Debut: Automatic Transmission in Copper S and Cooper S Convertible
An all new six-speed automatic transmission for the MINI Cooper S and MINI Cooper S Convertible makes its debut. Models equipped with the new unit - which features Steptronic mode and Steptronic shifting paddles on the steering wheel - will be shown in Detroit. The optional automatic transmission, features sporty and responsive gear changes, providing a dynamic driving experience tuned specifically to match the sporty character of the MINI Cooper S.

The unit also features Adaptive Transmission Control which allows the transmission to adapt to one's driving style. As an example, the transmission will build the revs longer between gear changes if it 'knows' the driver enjoys taking the car to its limits.

A hydraulic torque converter offering maximum efficiency ensures a smooth gearshift, while the converter lock-up clutch guarantees an equally smooth flow of power and superior fuel economy. Despite its six gears, this new transmission requires a far smaller number of gearshift elements, making it much lighter and more compact in its design.

Limited Slip Differential Grabs Hold
A new limited slip differential has added another new feature to the MINI Cooper S and Cooper S Convertible equipped with 6-speed manual transmission. A performance feature coveted by motoring enthusiasts, the limited slip differential helps to divert more torque towards the drive wheel with better traction, ensuring power is transmitted to the road more effectively. This helps to increase traction under acceleration or during cornering, resulting in improved handling and increased stability.

The torque-sensitive differential manages torque output under acceleration and offers a 30 percent slip rate; meaning there is no loss of torque if the difference in grip between the two wheels is 30 percent or less. The system also allows the threshold for Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) to be increased without impeding the system's safe intervention in slippery situations. All of this benefits the enthusiastic driver of a MINI Cooper S at its performance edge.

Did You Know?

No manual boot release was fitted by the factory until October 2002 .

This meant that in the case of an electrical malfunction, there was no way to open the boot hatch.

This problem could be remedied by the Do-It-Yourselfer for less than $25 in parts, unless you needed to spend an addition $40-odd to replace a superceded lock mechanism.

The power steering fan shared the same electrical circuit as the radiator fan until January 2003.

This meant that if road debris jammed the power steering fan causing the common fuse to blow, the radiator fan would not operate and the engine would overheat.

Putting the power steering fan on a separate electrical circuit was covered under warranty per Service Bulletin M320104.

The power steering fan was unprotected by a grille until October 2003 .

For protection many owners added an aftermarket shroud like the stainless steel one shown below:

Did You Know?

Rear fog lights were not first available as a factory option until December 2003.

Despite the fact that the bulbs and wiring were present in the tail light assemblies, and that rear fog lights were an option in Europe, MINI USA originally chose not to offer them.

Some owners used them as extra brake lights, while many undertook a quest to get the fog lights to operate.

A grassroots petition started in November 2002 caused MINI USA to rethink their position on as evidenced by this May 2003 Autoweek article:

Mini will get a rear fog lamp in the not-too-distant future, says Jack Pitney, head of Mini’s U.S. operation.

Big deal?

Well, it is to 729 signers of an e-petition (petitiononline.com/MINIfogs) irked over a disabled fog lamp that dresses the Mini’s rear end.

Europe gets the working edition of the lamp, but U.S.-spec cars are lacking the switch and software to activate the light. Pitney says all U.S. Minis, new and used, will get rear fog lamps.
The "not-too-distant" future for used MINIs turned out to be the end September 2003.

A rear fog light was not a factory option on the 2005 model until November 2004.

In July 2004 the fog lights changed from one in each tail light assembly to a single one in the rear bumper position formerly occupied by the reverse light. Unfortunately, because the new fog light location was illegal in California and Oregon, MINI USA decided not to offer the rear fog light as an option.

Once again deluged by customer complaints, MINI USA obtained a waiver from California on the fog light location and made the fog light a factory option, except in Oregon. In February 2005 a bulletin was issued for retrofitting the rear fog light, but it only applied to cars built after mid October, as those built prior had no wiring harness for the light.

Press Release - 04/12/2006

Woodcliff Lake, NJ - April 12, 2006... MINI USA announces the North American Debut of the 2006 MINI Cooper S with the John Cooper Works GP Kit (GP) at the New York International Auto Show.

This limited-production, sport tuned model comes exclusively in a two-seat configuration and offers a level of performance that makes it the most powerful MINI available from the factory. The 'GP' produces 214 horsepower and is approximately 100 pounds lighter than the standard MINI Cooper S model, allowing it to achieve a top speed of 150 mph.

The two letters "GP" in the name of this unique model stand for "Grand Prix", paying tribute to MINI's motor sport pedigree - a pedigree not only demonstrated by the Classic Mini's Monte Carlo rally wins in the 60s, but by MINI's competitive successes today, including road racing, auto cross, rally sport and even drag racing.

The MINI Cooper S with the John Cooper Works GP Kit will be limited to a production run of exactly 2,000 units worldwide. The US market will receive an exclusively limited number of only 415 of these cars which go on sale this fall with a Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price of $31,150 including a $550 destination charge.

Under the bonnet, the MINI Cooper S with the John Cooper Works GP Kit features additional modifications to the intercooler, the supercharger and the electronic engine management system. With these modifications this model now boasts a 46 horsepower increase in engine power over that of a standard Copper S model, producing 214 horsepower and 184 foot-pounds of torque at 4600 RPM. The low restriction twin-pipe sport exhaust, adds an impressively throaty sound, underscoring the enhanced sport-tuning of the engine.

The performance-enhanced power plant in the new MINI Cooper S with the John Cooper Works GP Kit offers even more on-road performance with acceleration times of 6.5 seconds from 0 to 62 mph. To transfer this extra power to the road, the car comes standard with a limited-slip differential, enhancing traction under acceleration. This feature not only helps to optimize traction on slippery roads, but also during spirited driving. DSC Dynamic Stability Control adds a further level of active safety on the MINI Cooper S with the John Cooper Works GP Kit.

An essential feature of the John Cooper Works GP Kit is its sport suspension and sport brakes with components carefully matched to the greater power of the engine. Even firmer springs and stronger dampers enhance the outstanding agility of the car while larger sport brakes with special composition pads add greater stopping power.

The new MINI Cooper S with the John Cooper Works GP Kit stands out with an exclusive Aerodynamics Package with deeper, more contoured front and rear air dams and side sills. The roof spoiler with its racing wing profile is a prominent feature at the rear of the roof line.

The MINI Cooper S with the John Cooper Works GP Kit also features an exclusive metallic paint scheme in Thunder Blue with the roof finished in Pure Silver. Adding exclusivity to this limited-production model, each MINI Cooper S with the John Cooper Works GP kit is sequentially numbered with a distinctive roof graphic just over the side door. The surrounds on the air scoops along the engine compartment lid and in the front air dam are also finished in Pure Silver. The exterior mirrors come in an attractive contrasting Chili Red. And white side direction indicators come standard.

The purist interior of the MINI Cooper S with its John Cooper Works GP Kit exudes more than just a "touch" of motor sport. The rear seat bench was removed to help reduce the weight of the car, and is now a flat loading area. For even greater convenience, the floor can be folded up in a Z-arrangement for easy access to two additional storage boxes. An aluminum finished cargo brace bar behind the front seats helps to keep cargo secure.

The sport interior is fitted with driver and passenger sports seats that come in an exclusive GP cloth/leather upholstery combination and a special three-spoke leather sports steering wheel. The dashboard again underlines the sporting character of the car with a center mounted speedometer and the tachometer mounted on the steering column. Both displays come in Anthracite, with red needles ensuring excellent clarity and readability.

Additional weight saving measures included replacing the conventional rear control arms with ones made from aluminum. This along with modifications the body and omission of some of the sound-deadening material come together to help reduce the overall weight of the car by approximately 100 pounds compared to a MINI comparably equipped Cooper S.
