Not sure it's a 'driving road' but Winnats Pass (think that's what it's called looking at google map) in the peak district has the wow factor, turn the corner then just such a steep hill through the valley and the view is amazing! I'll second the petworth road too!
i just pack an M&S picnic. Why go for fast food rubbish when I can eat quorn scotch eggs, egg mayo and cress crustless sandwiches, and cucumber sandwiches along with a fruit salad in champagne sauce in my MINI in traffic?
Snowdonia is fab. The horseshoe pass near Llangollen is also really quite stunning when the weathers nice, me and my friends used to drive there on our lunch break in sixthform lol
Wales is amazing for driving - my favourite is driving from Cardiff towards Brecon then on to the Elan Valley which is my most favourite place in the whole world ever. Feels a million miles from anywhere and all the Victorian dams look incredible.
A4085! It's just like the road on the Peugeot 207 advert where the Sat Nav finds the "best route" Found it last week when we went to Wales for the weekend... there's a LOT of great roads in Snowdonia.
Snakes Pass... can someone please tell me where it is?? I THINK i've been on it but it had average speed cameras (SPECS) on it... is that the right road?
W44ne g the snake pass is the road between glossop and sheffield, last time i went there weretn cameras but theyve reduced the speed limit across most of it to 50.
the one with distance speed cameras is the woodhead pass which is a little further north of the snake and not as much fun!
Without any doubt, Glasgow to Tarbert on the Mull of Kintyre, empty brand new tarmaced roads passing loch fyne, loch lomond. Drive it every year and it just keeps getting better and better
those winding roads along the western lochs are amazing, although it can get a bit tiresome driving 30 minutes down one side, only to do a 180 at the top & then drive 30 minutes down the other side
for me the best roads have to be in northumberland 'cos they're always empty
Ohhh! do tell more - which roads in particular I am working in York till June and as the evenings are getting lighter would be nice to go for a little drive (bearing in mind I do have a fair few points) to a decent pub for dinner instead of hotel food all the time
Fort William to Mallaig then ferry to Skye , up through Skye to Kyleakin and over the bridge back to Invermoriston along the side of Loch Ness back to Fort william. STUNNING, and not a camera in sight but then again I am a bit biased, even beter on a bike (engined variety)
My commute to work is on a rather nice road once I leave the Edinburgh bypass.... A68 all the way till I hit the A1 near Darlington.. once you are past the camera's at the Scotland/England border the road turns into a rollercoaster lol! There are also the options to head off on various roads to Kielder, Wark and Bellingham which, if you chose the ones for 'lighter vehicles', can be real fun
I also like the A7 - nothing better than hammering up there to wake me up on the way home after a long drive up the m6 .. no cameras, lots of twisties.. but those are my commuting routes... think I may just have to do the trip to Skye on the next Bank Holiday as that sounds like a great route and its a long time since I have been there
Just thought of another couple!
Fort William to Kingussie with I promise you one of the best views in Britain on the high part of the road on the side of Loch Laggan ( looks toward the house used in Monarch of the glen).
Fort William , over Corran Ferry and round the Ardnamurachan Peninsulsa , Go to the lighthouse at the end of the road and then come back to some of the best beaches in Britain at Ardtoe near Acharacle. Follow the road back to lochailort and down to Glenfinnan, visit the monument and then back to Fort William.
Promise I aint making upthe names!! and again the only cameras belong to tourists.
We did a couple of the exact routes you mention with a few other MINIs last summer, the roads, the weather and the company was incredible. This is the beach near Morar:
We are planning to go back next year. My parents are up there at the moment, I am very jealous!
Also highly recommend, the Evo triangle in North Wales - 15 miles of motoring awesomeness
anybody done these? or got any other recommendations? preferably in central to west wales, but not that fussed.
Thanks, Rochie
