New Zealand Mini Cooper S 2006 R53 Engine

Hi there.
I have just been advised that i require a full engine replacement.
While I won't bore you with the details of the history, safe to say that I'm not overly happy with how it has occurred after purchasing this second hand from a non Mini Dealership.
Had many issues but now at the point of it being required to be replaced.
Can anyone advise on the realistic costs involved and if a second hand engine is even a realistic idea to pursue in Australia?

need some more clues why do they think it needs a new engine, a lot of garages on older cars always say needs a new engine when what they are really saying is they wont guarantee any repair,, change over a engine looking 12 hours of labour if no problems,

My 09 R56 blew a head gasket, low compression, wouldn't start. Engine replace suggested... $8300 labor, and long block! 80,000 miles,
