Possible cylinder-head gasket?, possible piston rings? could be a couple of other possibilities .

Its definitely in the oil though & you're not just getting a smell of petrol as you go to do the oil as the fuel pipe connects to the engine at the front under your inter-cooler (little rad) on Ss or a plastic panel on COOPERs / ONEs (DIESELS are totally different).

I don't want to worry you but I have seen plenty of MINIs that have had under bonnet fires , so I would make sure it's not leaking fuel ASAP!.

It's hard to suggest things on here, it will be a failure of some sort, but it will be an internal one (unless you have been putting petrol in the oil filler-cap , sorry!), so it could be hard to pinpoint, and very hard without doing checks, so I would have a mechanic (someone you trust & who knows what they are doing ) to have a look at it before it ends up worse or at worst case scenario in total failure .

And you have been removing the oil cap because....? I know of no reason the inside of the crankcase would smell like unburned fuel. You should look around the engine compartment to see where the smell is coming from, but its not from under the oil cap.
