Aug 2004 MINI Cooper - power steering... please help

Hi everyone,

Long time no speak. So Recently, I went to drive my girlfriend back home, when I started my car... My steering was very hard to turn, so I'm assuming power steering is acting up. i turned it off and started it again... Steering turned easily like normal... What I notice, is the second time I started my car, it turned off my climate control fan where first time it was working (normally remembers it was on, so when restarted should have stayed on)

Any ideas if the pump is failing (hope not ) or maybe some interference?

PS: I still drove it cautiously, but it seemed to work fine. All I know, I have a strange noise from the left side which I'm thinking, some bad ball joint.

PS cutting out momentarily is often the first sign of a failing pump, the pump draws a lot of current so any fault may have shut down the climate control as a fail safe.

Have the ball joint noise checked out.
Keep an eye on things and if it happens again look to replace the ps pump.....in the UK MINI Dealers seem to be replacing them under 'goodwill' even on older Minis out of warranty (see the ps pump thread on here) if you pay around 70 to have the fault diagnosed at the dealer and then ask MINI HQ for the goodwill offer on parts and labour.

If it fails while driving try not to panic, you won't loose actual steering but it will become very heavy and need much more force to turn. It often comes back for a while if you switch off and back on as you found (only try when parked!) and most failures seem to occur turning/parking at low speed, probably because this is when the pump motor is working harder at its maximum revs.

Ahh I see, thanks for the tip. i also comtacted MINI HQ, maybe they do it under goodwill. Waiting for a reply - yes please, a fault guide would be useful. Will PM my email address.

Is it true, I cannot find brand new pump in stock from BMW? And I'm doing some research, I have to replace the fan too? If I don't sort out a goodwill gesture, might take it to an independent garage who specialises in them. After some tests, it seems to be the pump because it's now delaying for the steering to be 'light' and also last time it was making a loud whine.

The small fan below the ps pump (only fitted to R53 Cooper S in UK but to all R50 Mini's in some export hot climate countries) it should only need replacing if it has stopped working......it does not run all the time.

Re-conditioned pumps are widely available from companies like BBA-Reman but new units are usually available via the BMW main dealer spares network at a higher cost but not tried them myself recently? I have found parts in demand often involve a wait on 'back order' while they wait for new stock to be delivered.

Are re-built units reliable? Considering them cheaper and alredy used before? Also, mine is a UK R50 MINI.

Most re-built/reconditioned pumps have a 1 or 2-year guarantee, not had any trouble with them myself but I know some have had early failures under guarantee......you have to weigh up the possible extra hassle against cost and the fact that the guarantee won't cover labour/shipping charges again.....and whether you intend to keep the car for many years. Of course the repeat labour charge factor is not such an issue for diy home mechanics.

I do plan to keep it for a while, as I'm quite attached to it and not ready to let go. I'm gonna try get a brand new one and keep my old one to rebuild for the future - i take care of most labour work, so not a big issue.

I've just collected my '05 Cooper from the Mini dealers this very evening, following steering pump replacement. Mini paid 100% goodwill, just 99 for diagnostic test. But.... They found that the high pressure hose had a leak so the total bill came to 479, including the test!

Ah I see, Thanks Molly for the info. At the moment I'm waiting for a reply from MINI HQ and in the mean while, booked it in for this Wednesday. Lets see how it goes.
