Checks to confirm if a 2003 JCW is genuine?

I'm looking at a 2003 R53 Cooper S which is being sold as a JCW.

It has badges, correct looking engine cover etc, but I am led to believe all of this is easily retro-fitted.

So what are the checks to confirm if it is a genuine dealer fit kit JCW/. Eg is there a number printed/stamped anywhere in engine bay etc?

Thanks!

There should be a JCW kit number plaque on the cylinder head cover and the owner should have received a Certificate of Authenticity from the dealer who installed the kit.

i have seen these before scanned and remade to give a impression of being one, ie someone changes the parts over from a smashed one chassis number and a phone call

Unless there is a dealer database cross-referencing kit numbers to VIN, the only way to verify a 200 bhp JCW Kit is fitted is by examining the cylinder head.

You shouldn't be paying that much of a premium for a 1st Gen Cooper S with a JCW Tuning Kit.

It is a 2003, 19k miles, 1 Owner, Full Service History, Metallic Grey, Pano roof, Half Leather, Chilli Pack. Very good condition. Assuming genuine where would you put the value?

Thanks!

Might be worth checking the reg by doing a dummy insurance quote at comparethemarket or some such. This will tell you what the DVLA think the car is insured as.

Mini1: 2017 F56 JCW with enough tech to make Alec Issigonis spin
Mini2: 2016 R60 All4 Cooper S with more toys than Hamleys

As the JCW kit was dealer fit, my understanding is that they are on the DVLA system as a regular Cooper S. Certainly on Comparethemarket it comes up as a regular Cooper S.

Car has the kit number on the plaque next to engine and seems legit. But without original bill of sale and/or certificate what else can you do to be sure?

The vendor is hoping to get a replacement certificate from the BMW dealer which supplied car new.

Smile JCW Tuning Kit

I had the dealer install a JCW Tuning Kit. (JCW Exhaust and an ECU remap). They gave me a certificate that has its own serial number. They also affixed a badge with etched serial number to the valve cover and a sticker on the inside of the hood/bonnet. They also affixed a JCW badge on the left side of the trunk. Went from 184 to 228 HP. 😊

Hi

best check is to pull the ECU the dealer fixes a sticker here with fitting dates and serial number also should be sticker inside fuel flap saying only use super unleaded. if not a real one it will not be fitted.

If it is a real JCW it will have a mildly modified head, improved porting. If this has been done, there should be a red dot on the cylinder head and a number stamped in above the number that is there as part of the original casting.

In 2003 JCW was not yet owed by BMW (database?), and certrificate can be easily printed out...

Even better if the certificate is in its original ziplock bag with a JCW 'CHECKED' sticker :-)
