Mechanic advice

Hello! I drive a 2002 mini one. I LOVE IT SO MUCH! I took it for an MOT 2nd may passed flying colours no advisories, but recwntly its losing coolant fast so needs a new water pump. I've took it to a mechanic who has advised I need a whole new drive belt, tensioner, cylinder head, head gasket and coolant system (expensive job) my question is though I've had no warning lights whilst driving, I've had a temperature gauge go right up but then settle n be fine. The oil tap and the dip stock isnt milky at all n there is no smoke blowing out of either the exhaust nor the bonnet? Should I seek a 2nd opinion?

Any help or advise would be amazing (i only passed my test recently n this really is my dream car i dont want to have to loose it)

I'm not mechanic, but with a list like that I would get another one or two more quotes.

What test did they do to suggest you need all that work done?

It all really depends on wether you trust the garage or not.

how did he diagnose that ie did he remove the head and prove fault or was it a dont really want to mess around with this car and give worst case guess, trouble is its a double edge knife as nothing is for certain until car is in bits boils donw to how much money you what to lose on it, as most cars of that age get to age where just a head gasket repair will be about the true worth of the car or near to it
i would do your own headgasket test on it more likely its just water pump leaking and need to be bled free of air,

He apparently ran a compression test and a diagnostic with a computer..... but I was in work at the time so there is even a possibility he didnt run it....

I've never really been to this mechanic before he was roadside because I wasnt sure if it was safe to drive with the coolant leaking.... I've booked it in to another garage on Monday.... I'm tempted to not tell them what's wrong n let them run their own diagnostic n see what they say.

i would not tell the next garage anything other than its using water let them tell you rather than you instruct them as such it changes how the see the job ie when customer instructs you you just do what they ask for, but when you take on the job as its losing water its all the garages liability if get it wrong, no one can tell if head is cracked without removing it even then a pressure test is cold only and some cracks open with heat, that said worth buying a known good secondhand head if it were in question ie if gasket dont show signs of leak then take it head is nailed secondhand heads are not much money thats how i would play it,
water system needs testing ie sniff tester ask garage to do this, also worth doing a ultra violet dye test in water to find leaks is how i tend to do it these days this avoids having to take much apart from the beginning

Where are you? In the UK? If you let us know we might be able to suggest a more specialist garage that understands the Generation 1 cars such as yours. FYI you have a Gen 1 R50 One. 2002. Sounds as if whoever spouted the list of everything it could possible be from not a lot to completely knackered.

What was the result of the compression test? Get it. Post it in this thread. Even if you don't understand what it means ......... lots of us on here do. And can therefore comment.

Nigel's idea is a good one. Compression tests on cars with drive-by-wire throttles have to be done right - & usually are not.
The target is 150lbs psi +/- 10% on all four cylinders.

Meanwhile, don't rely on the gauges & lights - check the coolant level every morning, but don't overfill it.
The commonest issue is a leaky/split expansion tank which is not an expensive fix.

You are all so helpful and I'm so grateful!!! Thank you. Yes I am UK based.... he gave me a 4 page sheet.... that basically looks like an instruction manual ha! Yeah i have no idea what any of it is Haha! I took photographs of my oil cap and dipstick too because a mechanic where I work asked to see them.... so i shall post them too. Thank you again!

So 4 pages of compression test "results (unfortunately I have to post 4 different threads as my phone only allows me to attach one picture at a time) and then I'll attach pictures of my oil tap n dipstick.

And then my oil cap.... which is clean as hell! (And the main reason everyone is telling me the head gasket is fine!)
