Engine Manufacturer Identification

Hi All!!

Looking at buying my first Mini a Clubman Cooper Diesel
I have read a number of different threads saying the engine in the cooper diesel changed from Peugeot to BMW in 2010 and that the BMW one is more reliable.

I am looking at getting a 2010 or 11 model. Is there any easy way to identify the engine manufacturer? Is there a common VIN or Chasis number?
Also do you think I am right looking for a BMW engine over a Peugeot?

Thanks for your help

United Kingdom
PSA v BMW engines are well spoken about in here and tbh theres probably not much in it in terms of reliability on both units. The PSA engine has the cheaper road tax £20 per year and its a proven unit which is used by many manufacturers. The switch may have been July 2010 and the differences are easily spotted. For starters the engine cover on the BMW is much bigger and the turbocharger is instantly spotted on the PSA unit the minute you open the bonnet
