Weird electrical problem

Hello everybody. I have an 08 Clubman. Over the weekend the CD player sound would become scratchy and the indicator lights on the gas gauge would get bright and then dim down randomly. I have a feeling that everything is inter-connected in the speedo pod and this is going to be a dealer repair. If I switch to the radio for awhile and the put a CD in it will work all right for a while and then get scratchy again, but the gas gauge lights will continue to dim up and down.
Has anybody had a similar problem or any suggestions on what to check?
