Spare Key

Hi
Any suggestions where to get a programmed spare key other than BMW, never had a second key but would rather not pay dealer prices if possible.
Cheers Stu

Ocean bmw are 130 quid, i get a lot of keys cut as buy vehicles without. Most people cant do bmw keys. And if they do they cant normally beat bmw on price.

Bmw are one of the dealers that are reasonable with keys, most brands want 150 plus a houra labour to program.

as m_att says its still cheaper for bmw genuine over the counter for mini keys and you get a genuine bmw key that is buy and use, spoke to matey about mini gen 2 keys and he cant do them cheaper as bmw/mini ie ocean bmw dont need programming as ready done, where he would use a non genuine plus programming etc,

yep i can do that for you will need to bring your laptop thats going to have it mounted on it windows 10 is best windows 7 is also good windows 8 is a pain in arse but still works fine on it. i have mine mounted on a windows 10 and also use it for internet use what i ind is anti virus program will keep on thieving the files on scan as its after market software,, so recommend if you have a laptop that has no internet and anti virus program on it is best, i think this might be your problem with loading it and getting it to run, i its the software then i have a copy that can be used that i know runs perfectly,

Spare key

I have a very early 2002 R53 so this may be the wrong thread!
There's not a lot of data on Timpson's site.

I'd like to get a spare key that would at least open the door. I don't think the security slug in the key is needed for just that - is it?
1 - Can Timpson's simply cut/engrave a new key? ( I can provide a blank if needed). Cost?
2 - Can Timpson's provide a security slug? Cost?
3 - I'll be in Bath at Easter-time - is there a local store that can do this?

Anybody know?

Timpson can defintely do the 1st gen keys/fobs, but any good locksmith in USA should be able to do this at a reasonable price and more convenient for you in USA.

Cutting the key is no problem, but normally you would test the key/fob with the car before you leave and any problems can be rectify easily.

The new key fob would need a pairing process with the car which you can do yourself.

Check out or any other locations with "Remote Car Keys" services.

Not sure if you're on "North American Motoring", but if you google and post in that forum you might get someone who will know some locksmith in USA closer to your location.

gen 1 mini totally different from gen 2 as gen two has a fob with a back slide key attached, the fob is programmed to the car the battery cannot be changed without striping fob down and buying the correct rechargeable battery, timpson might be able to cut a blank key but would not be able to sort the programming needed to add a key or replace one,, like ma_ttt said bmw sell them in the uk for 130, having a key that does not allow the alarm to work correctly could also cause issues with insurance if ever got stolen say. ocean bmw at plymouth in the uk, i'm sure they would do mail order on it if asked, will need reg number and chassis number and exchange rate at moment in the uk its on its knees so should be cheaper i would think

knt & mike1967 - thank you both for your posts!

Yes, I'm active on NAM & yes, there's plenty of information there.
What I can't find locally is a locksmith to cut/engrave the MINI-style key blade.
I'm not much concerned about the remote key fob, although the security slug may be an issue. It appears that Timpson's can supply & program this, but it's not entirely clear from their website. Timpson's site also won't let me find their stores with the 'specialist' capabilities.
My primary goal is a key that will open the door if I lock my keys inside.
I was hoping someone had hands-on experience!

Just for clarity, I have 2 original MINI keys.
1 - with remote buttons in the fob & the tiny security slug.
2 - no buttons but with the slug.
I also have an aftermarket fob with no internals at all, just a blank blade.
