Mini Clubman Cooper S

Morning All! I’m currently on my 2nd Mini at the moment! I had an F56 Cooper D from summer 2014 and replaced it last summer with a Countryman PHEV (company car). I’m leaving my current job and need to sort myself out a private car. I’ve reserved a build slot for the outgoing Clubman Cooper S, subject to a 48hr test drive this week. Just wondering if anyone had any real world economy experience of commuting 80 miles a day on the motorway? I’m hoping to get as close to 50mpg as possible - generally when commuting I’m very light footed and cruise at 65 - 70mph

dont think i have ever owned a car that has done the mpg the makers lie about from past experience, if mpg is the important bit which travelling 80 miles per day i would think would be as if car will do barely 40mpg your looking two gallons per 80 miles,, but at motorway speeds you prob will struggle to hit mid 30s in the real world. ie add add road conditions and wind and hot and cold temps all have a impact.
me and wife would play mileage game see how many miles could get we found on all cars the magic road speed and mileages were on a motorway just below 50mph which is not very realistic, even then struggle to get what the makers figures were, the clubman cooper d was the only one we had that was close to it, we had that mapped 160bhp and it went as good as any standard cooper s petrol engine, while still giving over 70mpg on the flat driven at 50mph,, if buying a new unused mini diesel with makers warranty and keeping for 5 years max there good safe bet, if secondhand and is a n47 diesel over 70k on the clock should only buy one if timing chain and dpf filter has been replaced..
or the 3rd way new mini phev think you get best of both worlds, in a perfect world a phev connected to a house that has solar panels on it will help off set changing costs, and also future proof,, face it no one knows what this idiot governments are going to do next in the name of hit the car owners.
or could do a lease agreement just add fuel get a new car every year or so and just have a fixed monthly cost for the car,, doing big mileages i would say its a good option as long as the mileage clause is not silly low

Just out of curiosity, do many people own V8's in the UK? Every time I see a car reviewed from a UK source the emphasis placed on fuel economy amazes me. There are a lot of car makes with models that come with a diesel engine that you don't see in Australia.

hmmm country is full of brainwashed car haters it seems in the uk at the moment, or should say in the EU as we are still in at present, governments are trying to remove all diesel and petrol car off the road, they are pushing PHEV and EV cars,, with a view by 2030-2040 to have got rid of all petrol diesel stuff, not looking good for transport as no one will agree a path,, the stupid bit they have the tech already ie fuel cells or lpg powered with a petrol particulate filter type filter on the exhaust very near zero emissions and can keep the petrol engines. add to this the stupid people trying to be clever trying to run the country down its very up in air future for the uk,
i'm sure like it always has been the very rich will afford the extra taxes on big v8 cars still being produced here most of these get exported, gallon of petrol at present £5.50-£6.00 per gallon, theres a £12 per day charge to enter london road fund tax yearly for a v8 would be over £2000 ..
and diesels they have started making them the devils work again this government made a statement a threat to anyone buying one to think hard and long about as they are going to stop them being sold here, and add more taxes to them,, add this to all the cuts they have hit everyone with, and a tax system that works for all,,, hmmm all the very rich that is, and then the brexit rubbish, the big money has already left the country waiting to see what the next level of nightmare these idiots can do,, on every angle its almost like the perfect storm i feel.. i know why so many people from the uk have moved down under .

My V8 waiting for it's MOT last year, is in a category where emission test is visual smoke only, no stupid devices to stop it breathing.

Interesting. I'd be paying about $7.50 for a gallon here ($1.66 a litre). My V8 costs about $880 to register and insure (compulsory 3rd party) for a year, plus my comprehensive insurance ($2184 per year), no congestion tax or whatever it's called. Works out decent I guess.

especially when add the exchange rates in to it and what the wages are in this country , £18k to £35k and plus all the tax and stealth tax our governments keep dreaming up, even motoring fix penalty charges are always going up. guess they need the car owner to pay for all these mistakes

I think more of smiles per mile but if pushed it's down in single figures.
No eobd port just good old fashioned spannering.

would be worth lpg convert would help a lot. must admit i miss points and dwell angle and old sun tuners webber carbs with all the fun of keeping balanced, its poss to fit 6 pack on those v8's would turn it into something else, ie 4 webber twin choke webbers in a row sound nuts go well as well, pig to keep balanced

Obsession with fuel economy intrigues me too, fuel is expensive here yes but it’s expensive in all of Europe yet the rest of Europe don’t seem similarly obsessed? People here love a good fuel economy, they will drive in a way that is damaging to the car if it means getting more miles per gallon, even if it means costing more overall in repairs...

Don't do enough miles to LPG it.
It has electronic ignition and runs on a 4 barrel Edelbrock 500cfm carb with Offenhauser dual port manifold and I guess a lot of drivers wouldn't understand but you need the choke on to start it

4 pack ie 4 chokes bet sounds lovely, there is a tube intake for those carbs that add torque by making the inlet taller you know, or a ram air inlet, auto choke or manual one couple of pump on loud pedal and away it goes .
