Check your sump for an oil leak

Just had the Dooper in the dealers to rectify an oil leak.
Its a Sep 07 build; one of the first stop-start models, with 32K done. On collecting the car I asked what the problem was, and was informed that the sump and sump gasket had been renewed. (Plus on inspection it looks like the part that sits on top of the engine, where the oil filler goes into, has also been renewed.) On further enquiries they said they have had a few gaskets go, but no sumps.
Therefore it might be an idea for you all just to give your sump the once over, especially if you, like me, are close to the end of the warranty period; as it was only by chance that I saw a couple of oil drops on the garage floor.
No dramas getting it done though; dropped off in the morning, collected in the afternoon, all covered under warranty.

sounds like the oil filter gasket/seal has been leaking, perhaps not sealed/or damaged at the last service ?

they are probably making a large warranty claim on the sump/sump gasket which has not been leaking at all, and most likely not even changed !!

that's how they make their money.

Had my 2nd sump gasket replacement last week and a rear main oil seal, so it was a gearbox out job. Thank heavens for a warranty. The cost to Mini was £741. Now p/x'ing it for a new one.

I've had 2 sump gaskets changed & now they tell me there's a leak that requires an oil pump change, plus more stuff is wrong on dismantling it, I'll see the full damage when I collect it in a couple of days. It's a 08 58 Cooper D with 63k on it, had it from new & everything has been done on time.

this is ridiculous, why is it using so many sump gaskets/oil leaks ?

are they just ripping off BMW/MINI ? lucky it is still under warranty and I would get shot of it before the warranty runs out, or take out extended warranty.

You could be onto something, I have never complained about an oil leak, they've been "spotted" at services, it is still warrantied & on a TLC XL pack which should last til it goes back in 9 months with 80k on the clock (company car)

if the car is under warranty and you have never had an oil leak you sure will when it comes to the service.

an easy way for the dealer to make money.

my landrover sat on the same spot on my driveway for nearly three years, but had an oil leak when it went in for the service, although my driveway was spotless !!

they had it in for four days and apparently changed gearbox seals !!..............problem is you never really argue if it's under warranty and the dealer knows that.
