I have a 2012 cooper clubman and no matter how I drive it I can't get better than 41 to the gallon. It went into mini for a full software update but it made no difference. very poor.

That is very poor - verging on petrol poor.
Have you checked it is definitely a diesel?

Mine is still averaging just shy of 70 MPG.
(Albeit a One D, not a Cooper, but that doesn't make much difference.)

There is a popular website in Germany for tracking your fuel consumption, which allows you to compile statistics of other cars: Spritmonitor.de

Here is my analysis for Diesel MINIs from May 2013:

2011      58      50
2010      53      53
2009      54      52
2008              52
2007              52

Average   55      52 MPG (UK)
These include a lot of winter tyres and high speed autobahn. So you could do better in the UK.

But I can't see a noticeable difference between the later models with BMW engines and the earlier PSA ones.

59mpg

I have had my mini for 7 years now and it is getting towards 75,000 miles, I mainly do motorway miles at an average speed of 80. I am quite heavy footed too but I seem to be getting more miles out of my dooper than all of you, I seem to be getting 59 MPG (never managed that magic 60!)

I have had the engine remapped more towards the economy than proformance, but it has made the world of difference it has more pull and seem to have given it more MPG. I think before the remapping I was getting around 56mpg.

Our 2011 Dooper came with Bridgstone tyres, and we used to average the low to mid 50's. Last November I changed them to Dunlop Blueresponse, and the first trip we made, it did an actual 65! Granted, it was a long steady run. Since then, it's consistently given an extra 3-4 mpg. The other day, I went over to Hull (M1, M18, M62, A63), and thanks to a good stretch of 50 mph in the road works, and then taking the rest of the journey at 60-60 mph (with the occasional burst at 70 ish) it seemed to do pretty well. The "lie-ometer" said 66.4 mpg, but imagine my surprise when I filled it up and using the far more accurate method of brim to brim, it had actually don 78.76 mpg!!!!

Mine is at around 39,000. On longer journeys (say 3 hours) I am getting up to 75MPG. That is with occasional AC use and with what I'd call "sensible" driving - meaning, if I'm thrashing through traffic at 80mph, I wouldn't expect it to run at it's most economical.

On day-to-day, perhaps more like 60-65 depending. If I have a play with the sports button and have more "fun", probably more like 50.

I am measuring my MPG with the large LCD in the center, where you can reset/set your journey data. I've not reset the tiny screen by the steering wheel, so that is still set to an average from before I owned it (who knows when). So, if you haven't reset this, you should, as not everyone will have the larger screen to more easily reset data.

I have used v-power since buying it as well.

I'm sure if I had a longer journey without AC on, and without the occasional burst through traffic (or bad traffic), I would go higher than 75. But as it is, I'm pretty happy it can get up there.

My car is a 2010 Clubman Dooper, I usually get about 45mpg knocking about to and from work, last weekend on a motorway run i managed 51mpg over 160miles averaging about 80mph.
15+ years ago my Escort TD 1.8 used to give 55mpg whether knocking about or thrashing down the motorway, so much for new technology.

Are you sure your 2010 is the BMW engine? Or the older PSA one? I think late 2010 was the cross over.

By the way, reading your post and bits of this thread, I guess I am completely naive... But I just wouldn't expect my car to be most economical at 80MPH. At least, if I were on a longer run and were trying to drive economically, that's not what I'd do... (And isn't, and I get 75MPG.)

BTW, does anyone have a link to the official ratings given for this car/engine? I seem to remember it being rated at around 80MPG MAX. But cannot find such info anymore.

I can only guess your Mini works differently to your old Escort . I'm at 60-70mph when I'm getting my 75MPG.

Obviously, yours is a Clubman, so I guess it weighs a touch more than my hatchback, but if you're only getting around 50MPG on longer runs, something ain't right. Also, not to be personal, but I am 5'11 and 11 stone, almost always travelling alone. If someone is larger, and with passengers, that's obviously going to effect things a little.

Try sitting at 65-70mph (and just give yourself an extra 20 minutes if needed), and be very gentle with the throttle and gear changes, see where that gets you. Remember to reset the MPG counter. Put the v-power diesel in.

I think you'll see a difference

Side note: My stats are from using cruise control as well. I have no idea if that is better or worse, but I am guessing it might be better without cruise control.

Our Cooper D is late 2008 , done 58000 miles. Main use is short journeys but the overall consumption is 54.3mpg over the whole mileage. 60mpg is very easy to achieve.
