Exclamation Cooper D Nasty Engine Noise, Help!!

I bought a 2007 Mini Cooper D a few weeks back and it has covered 75,000 miles.

A few days ago i noticed a weird sound (like the timing belt jumping or grinding against something) The belt doesn't seem to be sitting directly centrally on the 'wheel'.

Could the noise be the water pump?

I have very little idea about what this could be??

Has anyone got any suggestions about what this could be, it would be highly appreciated.

Thanks

Will

My belt doesn't sit centred either. I think this is a "feature" of the car rather than a problem. The water pump failing makes more of a screeching/whistling/high-pitched noise at idle rather than a grinding noise.

Is this car a manual transmission? IF so, then one possible source of the noise could be the throwout bearing in the clutch housing and/or the dual-mass flywheel that could need replacing (especially at that mileage if the car was driven rough by the previous owner).

Can you try to localize the noise and/or perhaps see if it is transmission related? Does it occur all the time? When the car is moving? When the car is stationary? Both?

Im from England..

I have a mini cooper D 2007 which hasnt given me any problems at all...well so I thought....it just failed its MOT!!!

the reason for Failure was according to Kwik-fit "Engine sounds poor condition and emits black smoke on acceleration."

I have no idea what it could be I contacted Local mini but was unable to get much help apart from the usual book it in which I have done....I thought in the meantime maybe someone else can help??

Thanks!!

Probably EGR - related. Need to get a diagnostic done.

"Engine sounds poor condition" sounds pretty subjective to me...
