Post-facelift R56 Cooper D w/ BMW N47 engine - reliable?

Hi,

I'm in the market for a new MINI and I found a good deal on a 2011 Cooper D with the 1.6 BMW N47 engine... however, I'm worried about the reliability of this motor. After reading up on it on BMW forums, it seems like there is a timing chain problem going on.

How serious is the issue? Would it stop you from getting a post-facelift R56 Cooper D? Does this engine have other serious problems?

Thanks!

long and the short of it bmw should be ashamed of what they have done to its customers,, the n47 engines have the timing chain mounted at the rear of the engine, so to replace them its either engine out or gearbox out or on mini its both out, ie all the front off and remove it, very big job,, the n47 was based and redesigned on the earlier totally bomb proof m47 engine my daughter has one is a compact 320td its running 240bhp at the rear wheels has done 160k and is still running good on same chain,,, she had a later 1 series with the n47 chain at rear chain snapped at 72k totally destroyed the engine as diesels dont do well with broken chains as everything is closer..
i cannot believe a company like bmw could get this so wrong ie thin second rate made to a budget timing gear on their engines almost like its a plan to make more money when cars are out of warranty thats my view to it,, i see these engines a lot needing chains doing through out the range of n47 chain at rear of engine,, also the petrol m46 onwards as well as well as the prince vti engines used in the cooper s and psa group cars,, i just sold our clubman cooper d that had the in my view a better engine as long as serviced correctly and oil feed filter is removed,, and the psa engine has timing belt, it also does 70-80mpg where the later bmw engined cars barely in the real world will do 60mpg or worse.
car makers have been banging on timing chain is for the life of the engine,, hmmm if 70.000 miles is life of engine,, the old designed mercedes and bmw engine before year 2000 would do 300k plus big heavy chains made to last,, the rubbish they use now in the name of saving weight for emission laws is ripping everyone off.. but it does keep me busy
and yes has stopped me buying another one gone to volvo now 75mpg out of the 1.6 edrive model no chain
