Yesterday I even managed to get some very undignified front wheel spin pulling onto a roundabout and stamping a bit harshly on the gas on a wet day. Haven’t had that since I owned an MG Metro Turbo....... so the PHEV All4 isn’t a 4WD vehicle at all because that would not have happened in a proper 4x4 with various viscous couplings and traction aids to send the grip around the wheels. It doesn’t boost my confidence in the PHEV for driving in snowy conditions. BUT i’m Still loving the car and will resort to my Defender if the snow gets deep.
I was wondering the same. If the rears are electric and the fronts are petrol, but only both seem to come on together if you boot it hard. Normal, when petrol kicks in, electric stops, so I assume you
are constantly going from front to rear wheel drive.
My son who works in the motor industry thinks if it is in Sport mode both are always active, but I am not sure about that.
We are resorting to charging it every other day for now, just to give the chance for the petrol engine to stretch its legs. Pain there is that its a dirt road running around the back of the house and it isn't very big, so isn't fun backing the car into the garage to plug it in to charge. Also have to get up at 7am in the morning to drive it back out for the wife to go to work.
Also figured its nearly practically pointless trying to charge it on any public charger, because of the costs involved and the size of the battery in the Countryman. Only place would be worth it, is any where that is free. Only place I know is our local CostCo and one National Trust site, which is 40miles away...
A suggestion Shiki - I have a similar problem with the power cable until I can get my trailer that fills my garage sold, then the car will fit nicely inside...... I now have a heavy duty extension lead that runs from my garage power socket, the length of the garage to the up and over door where there is enough gap in the weather strip for the yellow cable from MINI fits just nicely through the gap in the seal! I left the car for 3 months plugged in on this rig. I’ll post a photo later
It's a problem with our street, I'm afraid. I have no other choice. IN front of the house is a pavement followed by a grass verge. So one heck of a distance to go, if we park on street in front of the house.
Behind the house, our gate leads straight onto the dirt track, so no space to park it outside the gate, on an extension
However, if I back the car into the back garden, the included charging cable *just* about reaches the car, thankfully.
Obviously didn't really think this through before buying a PHEV, hahahaha. I had sort of hoped that it also behaved like a hybrid, but this turns out not to be the case. As an example, the Lexus CT 200h would manage the battery and top it up automatically. However, the CT also can't do up to 78mph on battery alone, like the Countrman. Pros and cons I guess...
It does work in 4wd most of the time.
Unless you drive it in electric mode only , everytime the engine kicks in during acceleration the electric motor on the rear are working. It all depends on the throttle applied.
I have done some off road this summer and i was positively surprised about the quality of the 4wd traction , always beautifully managed by the software.
I truly love this car.
You can check which wheels are driving in the menu that shows chargin, coasting, etc. this shows that in sport it uses 4wd or 2wd (you can even choose sport in Maxedrive).
On a rainy day I really pushed it to slip the front wheels on electric mode and the combustion engine kicked in a fraction of a second. The manual says it analises the road a lot of times per second to activate the correct traction.
I am a Land Rover owner (the mini stays in a garage with a series, a defender and evoque) so I know about traction. I regret buying a FWD evoque and I can tell the Mini has a very good 4WD system...
