There was a story on here in the news section previously, but that's gone with the update.

Basically there have been (test/development) MINIs made with a hotter than now, and also a "JCW" (well, tuned/faster) diesel engine, and apparently they're impressive. But from what I understand it's not anything like a dead cert a true "MINI John Cooper Works Diesel" will be released.

Diesel Cooper Works on way?

Spotted this interesting news in Auto Express today, also on their website.........
Diesel Cooper Works on way | Auto Express News | News | Auto Express

Quote:-
"The adventure never ends with MINI, and itís about to take a surprise turn... Auto Express can exclusively reveal that the firm plans to introduce greater economy and efficiency to its JCW hot hatch by swapping its turbo petrol engine for a diesel!

The famous British marque pulled the covers off its new JCW Convertible at the Geneva Motor Show, and once the hot Clubman joins the line-up in July, the petrol-powered performance range will be complete. However, the firmís plans are only just beginning.

The JCW diesel would use the Cooper Dís powerplant, but it will stay true to its performance car heritage.

The 1.6-litre unit currently produces 110bhp and 240Nm, while a hot version would deliver more than 160bhp and significantly increased torque.

During an interview with a senior engineer, we posed the question of whether diesel power would ever be an option for the JCW brand. He wouldnít confirm the existence of an oil-burning variant, but commented that it would be a ďgood ideaĒ. With the project still on the drawing board, buyers shouldnít expect the new oil-burner to arrive this year.

Meanwhile, MINIís tuning arm is also preparing for the arrival of the firmís new crossover SUV. Bosses remain tight-lipped about whether a JCW version of the compact 4x4 will be built, but itís likely to appear soon after the model is launched next year."

Well there has been interest in a MINI STD for some time. Whether the extra power will come fom a PSA unit or a BMW unit is another matter. It seems that a BMW unit is being adapted for the US market.
Can 160bhp be got from the existing unit-seems a bit far fetched.

Autocar's article seems like a chat with some bloke down the pub rather than serious investigative journalism.

So MINI STD or STI has a nice ring and personally i'd be itching to get my hands on one.

Totally crap, just read that, and as usual they've got so much wrong that none of it is worth reading or basing any buying decisions on

Yes there is a more powerful diesel MINI coming, but not this year, and not with the current engine either.

Thanks for clarifying, Rakey. Do the "rumours" go so far as to including a diesel convertible?

Not here much any more

the 116d still uses the two litre diesel found in the 118d and the 120d

Just been further detuned and frugalised
