My new R55

This is my 3rd mini over the years. Had a brand new 2005 Mini Cooper. Then a few years ago, bought a 2007 R56 which I loved, even though it enjoyed a drink of oil!
Sold that after my divorce and had a variety of cars, Skoda Octavia VRS, BMW 325 and then an Audi S4 Avant.

This was initially bought as a cheap runabout and replaced the Audi, as my main form of transport is a motorcycle.

It's developed a few issues in the month of ownership though.

It doesn't have steering controls for the stereo, if I get one on eBay, is it just plug and play? I may also swap out the centre Speedo for an android head unit, has anyone done one of these? I've seen a few reviews and they seem good, you just loose the Speedo in the middle.

A few issues are the rear passenger barn door won't open, this occured after the fuse box in the drivers footwell was replaced, when the fuel pump relay failed. It's also going in on Tuesday for a vanos sensor replacement.
Rear washer and wiper also stopped working after the fuse box was replaced.

The fuse box was from a different model mini, which might be why, I just need to figure out what's wrong (if anyone has any suggestions)

the inboard fuse box as you put it is a lot more than that its called bcm body control module its the central brain so is programmed to your car cannot just be changed for a random one as its runs all of the car, new genuine with programming from mini will cost 600-1000, its possible to have it repaired a lot cheaper bba reman have a lot of options,, also can get a secondhand one and have it cloned to your car as long as still have the one the car came with from factory, the steering wheel buttons also needs programming in to the bcm to work correctly, as for the middle speedo these are also programmed to car so the electronics need to be done right if possible, your best cheapest bet is a car electrical tech guy who specialise in these controllers and have the programs software and hardware to do it correctly,, as getting it wrong say sending a 12v up a 5v rail or directly in to the canbus network can and will spike the ecu and kill it off. lost count the amount of times have seen someone try and wire a radio in and do this,, below link worth talking to

as for going in for a vanos solenoid hmmm hope your luck is in have seen many like this and turned out timing related ie chain stretch so vanos running at end of its travel as such throwing up a code for vanos, heads up turbo n16 engines tend to need chains around 60.000 miles to keep running at their best, have seen some with under 30k,, i'm only saying this for your aware its so much cheaper to prevent chain failure or top guide failure and bent valves than having a head off and valves replaced from not being aware of it,, vw audi fsi and tfsi engine do the same trick but a bit later as a rule around 70-80k,, its what they get when using bicycle chains in the first place.

The car was in with a mini specialist, who checked the vanos sensor by swapping it around, the fault code followed the faulty sensor. Mine is a 2010 with the N18 engine, they assured me the timing chain and tensioner were ok (my R56 had the tensioner replaced)

I've sent the old fuse module off to a company that may be able to repair it and then I can put it back in. If not, I may have to look at the other option of programming the eBay 2nd hand one to work with the car.
Is programming the steering controls easy to do? I have an OBD tool

The Android head unit is a plug and play job, so should just swap straight over.

bit of info below its a shared engine with some bmw own cars its more like a prince engine than a bmw one share a lot of parts like head gasket and head bolts a lot of stuff,, basically a a non turbo engine with a turbo fitted to it, ie twin vanos and vvt on inlet cam

BMW N13 / Mini N18
The turbocharged 1.6 litre variant used by BMW and Mini[11] is called the N13 for BMW applications and the N18 for Mini applications. The N13 replaced the naturally aspirated BMW N43 and was produced from 2011 to 2015. It is BMW's first turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine since the 2002 Turbo ceased production in 1974.

The N13/N18 engine uses direct injection, a twin-scroll turbocharger and Valvetronic (variable valve lift). BMW sold the N13 alongside the larger displacement BMW N20 turbocharged straight-4 engine. The N13 was effectively replaced by the turbocharged 3-cylinder BMW B38 engine.
