Massive MPG Drop on Cooper D?

Hi,
I drive a 2008 R56 Mini Cooper D.
I’ve always averaged 60mpg upwards although in recent weeks I have seen it drop to a consistent 45mpg.

I had noticed there was a split in one of the turbo hoses which I have repaired successfully - although the MPG still remains at 45mpg.
I have tried fuel additives and also driving at high revs in an attempt to clean out the engine.

I then plugged into BMWhat iPhone App and ran an OBD diagnostics test:

Fault: “Engine / motor fault unknown failure”.
Code: “BMW 48A7”

Fault: Unknown Failure
Power Management / Closed Circuit Power Management
Code: “BMW 3EED”

No other fault codes recorded.

Anybody any ideas?
Any help much appreciated.

You'll need a better code reader to make sense of that.

One of the issues that can lead to a decrease in fuel mileage is a malfunctioning EGR valve. However, I think you'll need to get a better quality diagnostic first to know what is going wrong.

When was the last time you reset the fule mileage tracker?

Hi,
Thanks very much for your response!
I've been resetting my fuel consumption weekly and getting a consistent 45mpg.

Do you recommend any diagnostic software yourself? I've used BMWhat on the iPhone and DashCommand also on iPhone.

I have a copy of INPA 5.02 although in having trouble getting it to work. If I can get it to work would it be able to scan an R56 diesel and tell me what I need to know?

Many Thanks!

They may be manufacturer specific codes, in which case you'd need a dealership to read them. Don't have any recommendations myself, sorry.

There are two things that might be causing the mpg to drop that aren't serious.

1) It's cold outside and I've noticed on our derv cars that winter mpg is lower than summer.
2) Is you're start/stop doing its thing, is it too cold for it to activate? It's amazing how much fuel gets used just idling in traffic.

But as others have said, get the car plugged in to some proper diagnostic equipment.

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies!

Quick update;
Car still the same, average mpg sitting around 50 now, after swapping MAF sensor to a known good one.
Something else has started to happen though - I now get what I can only describe as a misfire/loss of power (usually at low rev, but not always).... Usually only lasts for a second or so, but it is getting worse! No management light coming on whatsoever. Only code the car is throwing out now are; 0048A7 (unknown failure), 004089 (Unknown DTC fault), 003EED (Unknown failure/Power Management/Closed current Power Management)

Starting to think this is a fuel feed problem....? Would the fuel pump cause a loss in MPG??

(The start-stop feature is working!)

thoughts appreciated.

I've got a 1.6 Diesel Clubman (2011) and my average combined MPG always sits around 45mpg... sometimes even lower, 42, 43

My car has only done 18k miles and have been serviced twice in that period - oil change etc.

After reading this thread makes me think maybe something is up with my car? I've never known any different mpg wise as I brought mine 6 months ago second hand.

Hi!

Did you manage to solve the problem with the 0048a7 error code?

My Carly app is throwing the same code, and I´m not able to clear it out. And I can't find anything about this.

need a better scanner for codes, chances are you have been driving around with a air leak on the inlet pressure side before it splits completely. this will block up the dpf filter as generates soot,, also if any fault codes stored in ecu the car will not do a regeneration of dpf filet,,, autocom cdp plus is safest scanner with full function, ie you need it to read p-codes dealer only codes also will need to force a regen on dpf filter to cure it
