TBH it does not sound very plausible. He could have removed the coding, but to what effect it affects the steering is doubtful. The steering module does not have that many functions that can be coded to alter its behaviour. You can recode the module with a NCSExpert and check for any errors in INPA. If the coding is missing the module will have an error stored in it. If the error is not critical (like a coding error) it will not alert you on the dashboard. You'd need a BMW scanner or INPA to detect this. Other than that, it might just be a faulty module, although I don't remember ever hearing about one before...

PS: Do you have DSC fitted or the plain ASC+T? Reason is, the DSC cars have a steering angle sensor on the steering wheel that sometimes requires calibration with a BMW scanner. ASC+T cars don't have that, so there is nothing to calibrate.

Must admit I was grasping at straws with my explanation. Plus I switched the DSC off today for a while and it felt no different.

I'm pretty sure it's a DSC version (it comes up with "DSC off" on the dash when switched off).

So how would the car drive if the steering angle sensor needed calibration? Would that possibly explain what I'm feeling?

Maybe, but I would not know for sure. If you go over at bimmerforums and search for the steering angle sensor you will find a lot more information... The system on BMWs is similar if not identical.
