Help! Knocking sound from engine, local expert needed. NE UK

Hi, I have a 2010 Mini Cooper Sport, which has just developed a really nasty knocking sound in the engine compartment.

I've taken it to a local mechanic who says it sounds like either the timing belt has slipped, or perhaps water has gotten into the engine causing damage.

He says, the engine will likely need stripped and rebuilt, or replaced.

Can anyone recommend someone in the Tyneside/South Northumberland area of the UK who is capable and honest?

I'm worried that if I take it to Mini, they will charge me a fortune...

Matt

timing belts slipped? that mechanic is an idiot the n14 engine has a chain..

the knocking sound is the prince engine death rattle
the top of the timing chain guide rails wear out and the chain becomes loose and slaps around.

its common for the n14 engine

most likely a mini garage job or competent mechanics job.

unfortunately i dont know of any mechanics in your area.

i would take it to a mini garage to se if you can get a quote.

also if it did have a timing belt which it doesn't a slip would most likely stop the engine in its tracks and if it was a minor slip it would be ruff running or not running at all..

Thanks for the reply, cam chain tensioner sounds much nicer than bent valves...
I've uploaded a youtube clip if you have the time, sounds a bit nastier in reality, louder than other clips I've just viewed on youtube.

With you on the slip causing more damage, car seems to run fine apart from the horrendous noise, though I'm too scared to push it.
