Modern vehicles are expensive, but one way to avoid headaches and purchasing a new ride is by properly maintaining your existing car or truck. As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Not only can regular maintenance save you money but it can also prevent unexpected mechanical failures. Nobody wants to be stranded on the side of the road in the middle of the night during a thunderstorm. Keeping up with your vehicle’s needs is critical to a happy ownership experience and fortunately there’s quite a bit the average motorist can do to keep their ride running in tip-top shape.

Normally try and buy a car with full service history ( like my 2002 Mini ) but once I get it - I service them myself ( unless needs specialist stuff - aircon refill etc). :)

OK, OK, so I'm going to sound really weird.
I actually enjoy servicing my Mini myself.
At least then I know it's been done correctly. ;)
Gotta agree with spikeyadrian here. I do all my servicing and most repairs. I've had my cars at main dealers for warranty repairs and they have failed to repair it and this was a bmw dealership!

Independent specialists for me, just to keep the service book stamped.

But I do most stuff inbetween services.

I'd urge anyone to NOT use dealerships, my reasons being...
Toyota: Car returned to me 'ticking' after cambelt change, I returned it to the dealership to sort out.
Mazda: Cambelt snapped weeks after having been replaced by dealership, luckily it was a non-interference engine.
Mazda: Wheel nuts tightened so tight I couldn't undo them.
Toyota: Handbrake tightened so much that the rear brakes were permanently on.
Toyota: Sump plug worked lose and fell out 7 days after being serviced.
BMW/MINI: Took it upon themselves to wash my car and left TFR on the textured black paint of my Aero bumpers.

Muppets.

+1 and keep away from BMW/ MINI if you can help it. My clubman went in to BMW on the 30th April for a simple paint job. 2 doors, quarter door, 2 quarter panels and both barn doors (warranty work). They still have the car and have broken the central locking. 2 MONTHS they have had the car!!!!

We have our Evoque in the dealer for 12 weeks since March it is only 14 months old and they cant fix that either. Three stop starts things, two brake pedals more upgrades than i can think of, but they wont replace the battery just keep charging it.

My worst dealer experience was when I took it my first mini in for new discs and pads.

And when I took off down the road I noticed a thud thud thud noise, so I pulled over and found the lug nuts on my front right wheel were loose!
