16" alloy wheels on a One: issues

hello everyone
i'm thinking about upgrading my steel wheels (fitted with 175/65 standard tyres).

I found on ebay 4 used alloy wheels ("stardust" model, MINI OEM) but they are 16". This means i'll have to change tyres too. So here are my questions:

1) what is the minimum size? (looks like OEM tyres for 16" are 195, do you think 185" is not enough?)

2) what about the spare wheel? Obviously it's a 15", is it still useful?? If not, what can i do?

3) I suppose these alloy wheels were fitted with runflat tyres, do you think it is safe fitting them with traditional tyres?

thanks :)

Hi there,

1) I can't help you here but there is a huge section in the FAQ section about wheel and tyre information.

2) the spare wheel is fine for any size alloy you have as it will have the same rolling radius as the original alloys.

3) It's fine to fit traditional tyres instead of runflats. You have all the safety precautions MINI recommend with non runflat wheels so its no problem done it myself!
If you go with 16" wheels ...

About the only tires available in 195/55-16 size are runflats. Most people replacing their 16" runflats with conventional tires go with 205/50-16 size:

sorry if i ask further, but i'm not so comfortable with this kind of stuff: same rolling radius does mean that the car has "no" problem to run with either 4 16" 195/55 or 3 as before and one 15" original spare wheel?

i've looked through stats and it looks like no one has choosed any kind of 195-16 normal tyres (and i wonder why...) so the right ones are 205/50-16 as you said. But there's another problem: is not a One underpowered to run these tyres?

thanks very much guys! :)

The space-saver spare on a MINI is not meant for long term use ... just to get you to a garage to get your flat tire repaired or replaced. It can be used with 3 wheels of any size as the diameter (and hence rolling radius) of it's wheel and tire combination will be "close" to that of the others.

The 195/55-16 is not a very common size, with mostly runflat and winter tires available. There are MINI One owners running 17" and 18" wheels with 205 and 215 tires, so you shouldn't have any problems running 16" wheels with 205/50 tires.
the only problem seems to arise with tires price, 205-55-16 look outrageusly expensive, probably l'll have to stick to the 15"...
