On the early cars, I believe the receiver is in the roof above the mirror - there may be a small oval grille there, but I think the headlining has to come down to get to it.
Some parts stores have a gadget that will test if your key fob is actually transmitting.
I'd try the re-learn sequence again - it's a little different for the early cars & it should be in the handbook.
