Hi there,

I'm looking to buy my first Mini for around $15,000. Obviously less is more but in this case I want to fork out a little extra for the punch of an S. I read that there can be an issue with the timing chain on the Auto S model, are there any other problems that I should look out for with this machine?

Thanks,
J

And to make matters worse bmw turn a blind eye to the problems that develop after the warranty has expired to the known problems like timing chain. I had the 2008 cooper s that had the death rattle.

Geez. What do you guys recommend then? Diesel? Another year range?

the diesel psa diesels are excellent.

the petrol engines from 06-2013 are ****

first gen cooper s cars had the tritec which is much superior

but if your looking for an auto dont go for the one or cooper coz they have cvts

the cooper s 02-early 06 has the aisin auto which is ok.

So from the years that I specified, auto Cooper D is a fine vehicle and manual Cooper S is also fine.

How about normal cooper Auto? Does this also experience the death rattle?

Also, Is a cooper S auto from 2002-2006 superior to the newer used models?

Thanks, J

Any second gen petrol mini 06-13 have the the timing chain issues

The cooper D engines are bullet proof

As are the 1st gen petrol engines
The cvt autos were used on the 1st gen one and cooper and they are woefully unreliable trannys

The 1st gen cooper s has the 6 spd getrag which is unbreakable

The one and cooper manuals from 02-04 have the midland tranny which if thrashed and poorly maintained can spell disaster.
In July 04 the one cooper and cooper s had a face lift the most important was the introduction of the 5spd getrag in the 1 and cooper.

You best bet for a reliable mini is a diesel second gen

Or a first gen cooper 04-06

Or the best choice a 02-06 cooper s.

The 1st gen was replaced by the 2nd gen in late 2006

This is an excellent list of things to look out for guys. We should really get some chronological list done so that it'll be easier for the other who want to join us as Cooper owners shouldn't we? In the meantime, perhaps we can put this thread into an easy to access bookmark or something so we can refer others to it when the need calls for it. Side note: maybe you could look at car financing to get your budget up? Just saying...
