2007 R56 non turbo front crank shaft seal replacement

Can anyone please tell me the correct depth to recess the crank shaft seal from face of block to face of seal?
the manual I have tells me to set it to the existing seals depth, but of coarse I read that right after I removed the old one from the block and had installed the new one flush. To which now I believe to be incorrect.
I could buy the tool to install the seal but I really do not wish to spend the money they are asking for one.
