First thing to do would be to get a diagnostic scan with the engine light coming on. This will hopefully have some codes giving you possible locations to look.
2011 Cooper smoking and No Power.
Hi we have a 2011 11600 cooper turbo diesel
and the engine light comes on, the car starts to smoke heavily and there is no power,
Have replaced the pipe from the breather to the air intake, which solved problem for a few miles, but then the problem came back,
no power and lots of sooty smoke,
has anyone got any ideas how to solve this problem?

Scan should tell you but my guess would be EGR valve, had similar on other cars in the past.

Local advice also suggests EGR valve and also to get an OBD scan
Am getting a scan and will post results.
