2011 R56 now in shop...

4508 Views 72 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  The Phoenix
Hey everyone, I bought my 2011 R56 base a month ago. 10 days ago, I noticed it was down 2 quarts of oil after 2000 miles. Then at 2500 miles the check engine light came on....I went straight back to the used car dealership.

I am going to guess the oil pressure was gone because again it was out of oil. That's 5ish quarts in 2500 miles. Unacceptable!

I am going to guess that it's the PCV value flap. I have a 2 month /3,000k warranty so.... let THEM figure it out.

Stay tuned for the drama!

I doubt it’s worth their while to open it up. Most likely they don’t have the skills to go that deep and the time/cost impact would make it impractical.

If it is burning oil at a high rate (burning, losing whatever) they said it will be a new engine. I can't even imagine how long THAT will take them.

We are still waiting on the part. Two weeks now. Ive owned the car 68 days, They have had it 35 of them.

dont surprise me get it here in uk with garages dealers that really have no clue what they are looking at or any idea of what it takes to put them right, It will come to a point where you will need to turn up the heat get your money back and move on from it perhaps,
Ive let them know that but they said that by law, they have to have the opportunity to try to fix it... but evidently there is no time limit and I am sure I am back burner for them. My bumper is being repainted now while we wait.

I have a 4x4 Jeep compass as a loaner. Its brand new. I should start doing off road stuff and enjoy it.

dont think I expert i learn something new every day to be honest , I dont just do mini stuff do a lot of vag and bmw stuff as well ,, while everyone in the trade runs away from prince engines i was always interested in beating it when i had one in front of me with some wacky fault that is how it begun,, its funny you ask 10 car techs about how you would do a job and get 10 different answers that would come to same outcome at some point I guess, being stubborn old fart helps a lot , dont like being beat by a lump of metal lol

So after 72 days in the shop, my bumper has been repainted and the cam shaft position sensor is in and reading correctly - so they say. I am going to pick it up today I think.

I’ve owned the car 106 days. Driven in 34.
I put 2700 on this loaner alone. I had two others.

now comes the 1200 mile oil consumption test.

fairly cheap to run lol, ie cheaper putting mileage on someone else.s car. its the trouble with these cars there is only one way to sort them properly and its a pistons out and get rid of the plastic oil rings ,, honestly they go from using 1 litre to 500 miles or worse to nearly no oil if driven gentle and very small amount if hammered as pcv system pulls oil through at high revs and higher crankcase pressures, I still get a kick out of after refreshing them zero crankcase pressure as such and go through mot ultra low on emissions,, little tip if ever have a oil leak at rear of engine that can be sign of pcv pipe cracked as many go, when i rebuild these i always run a smoke test before rebuild rule such issues out as can play hell with fueling , and after rebuilt as well ,, also exhaust flexi if leaks can causes a load of emissions issues , as ecu keeps adding fuel due to seeing the 02 on bottom sensor
I got the mini back on Thursday afternoon. They fix the sensor and repainted the back bumper. I am now on my 1200 mile oil consumption test. I have 30 days from last Thursday.

my wife said well how do you wanna put miles on that?

and I said “let’s Drive to Vegas“

so Saturday we went up to Vegas to see Billy Idol. The mini ran great on the way there and excellent on the way back. I got 34 miles per gallon with the AC and driving at 90 mph.

I’ve already done 650 of the 1200 and I’m putting another hundred on today.

always thought over there in the free world that speed limit was 55mph ;lol , with smokeys everywhere😁
Lol. No… no.
It’s 65 or 70 speed limit some places in California. The road to Vegas is a straight shot. We all were doing 90 (topped at 105 at one point)

I saw 2 troopers on the highway in 600 miles.

How's the oil consumption? If I recall, the garage locked/taped the oil cap to stop you making adjustments?
Yes it’s sealed off … so I can’t add or subtract. I guess we will find out in a couple of week. (Why would I add when I am trying to show consumption?)
I popped the hood tonight to see why my windshield wiper was not spraying on one side and saw the seal they put on the oil cap was broken. I immediately called the dealership to tell them it was not sealed correctly. I should have checked it when I picked up the car. I hope they are not trying something......grrr

I guess we can close this chapter with the dealer I bought the mini from. The cat was still full with oil when I had it checked after 1200 miles (Let’s hope they didn’t over till it before I picked it up).

but It was spot on the full mark. So hopefully that’s truthful.

It’s running exceptionally well. 34mpg on highway, 32 mixed 29-30 around town with the traffic light every single block.

Thank you all for your support and advice -esp Mike. I will still keep an eye on it.

@The Phoenix: How is the car now? Is it burning oil? Do you have to add any oil from time to time?

Thanks,
Sam
I will check it again tomorrow while I am putting in brighter headlights.

Ok I checked the oil today …. I checked immediately after driving 20 min, which I know is not the right way to check. It was at the top of the bottom point.
I figured if I let it sit 5 -10 min, it should be within range. I of course will recheck sometime soon after letting it sit.

it’s been an additional 1000 mikes since my 1200 mile oil test. I am pretty confident that it’s not majorly buying oil.
I do have a new pcv or pvc whichever value which I want to install also. Once I find it
